About the Role

Aircraft Mechanics I perform a combination of repairs on engines, sheet metal, structural components, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, power trains, and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty to meet assigned missions. This role involves troubleshooting malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing systems, pneudraulic systems, engines, auxiliary power units, and ventilation and heating systems.

Responsibilities

• Repair, replace, and rebuild aircraft structures (e.g., wings, fuselage) and functional components, including rigging, surface controls, and plumbing/hydraulic units using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brakes, welding equipment, rivet guns, and drills.
• Read and interpret manufacturers' and airline maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and methods for repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
• Replace or repair worn or damaged components (e.g., carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine-mounted gearboxes, and compressor bleed valves) using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
• Remove engines from aircraft using hoists or forklifts, disassemble and inspect parts for wear, cracks, or defects, repair or replace defective parts, and reassemble and reinstall engines.
• Adjust, repair, or replace electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories.
• Perform preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
• Service aircraft by flushing crankcases, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
• Supervise the jacking and towing of aircraft.
• Document work performed in maintenance records and verify satisfactory completion.
• Service engines and airframe components at line stations, making repairs short of overhaul to maintain safe operating conditions.
• Specialize in structural repairs, precision and functional spare parts, assemblies, or engine repair.
• May require specialization in sheet-metal, electrical work, avionics, or other aircraft systems disciplines.
• May be required to obtain licensure by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three (3) years of actual and recent aircraft, vehicle, missile, or related weapon system experience; five (5) years desired.
• Thorough knowledge of technical publications related to aircraft, missile, or wheeled/tracked vehicle maintenance.
• Understanding of maintenance categories and their application to contract units.
• Knowledge of engine operations, accessories, components, flight theory, rigging of flight controls, electrical/electronic systems, pneudraulic and mechanical principles.
• Familiarity with sheet metal, properties of materials, fuels, and oils.
• Ability to read, interpret, and use maintenance manuals, service bulletins, blueprints, wiring/schematic diagrams, data tables, and other specifications.
• Ability to inspect, repair, and operate ground support and auxiliary equipment.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and operate a government general-purpose vehicle.
• Ability to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
• Exposure to disagreeable fumes, cuts, bruises from tools, and hazards from moving vehicles (e.g., forklifts, sweepers).
• Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
• Frequently required to walk; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and work in tiring or uncomfortable positions.
• Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, and taste or smell.
• Frequently lifts items weighing 15–25 pounds; occasionally lifts items in excess of 45 pounds.

Pay

Hiring hourly rate of pay: $38.74 (set by Collective Bargaining Agreement).

• Current rate: $38.74/hour.
• On or around June 1, 2027: $39.90/hour.
