Aircraft Mechanic I, Airframes

Amentum is hiring qualified Aircraft Structural Mechanic I’s in support of U.S. Navy Aviation maintenance operations at NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA (VFA-106).

Responsibilities

• Troubleshoot malfunctions in aircraft structure, landing gear, flight surfaces and controls, anti-icing, pneudraulic, engines, auxiliary power unit, and ventilation and heating systems.
• Repair, replace, and rebuild aircraft structures (e.g., wings, fuselage) and functional components (e.g., rigging, surface controls, plumbing, hydraulic units) using hand tools, power tools, machines, and equipment such as shears, sheet metal brake, welding equipment, rivet gun, and drills.
• Read and interpret manufacturers' and airline's maintenance manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components.
• Perform progressive, phase, periodic, and other hourly, conditional, or calendar inspections, including:
  • Examining reciprocating engines for cracked cylinders and oil leaks.
  • Listening to operating engines to detect and diagnose malfunctions (e.g., sticking or burnt valves).
  • Inspecting jet engines and components for cracks, corrosion, foreign object damage, burned areas, distortions, security, warping, wear, and missing segments.
  • Inspecting jet engine turbine blades for cracks, distortion, corrosion, burn-out, security, or breaks.
• Test engine operation using testing equipment (e.g., ignition analyzer, compression checker, distributor timer, ammeter, Jetcal tester) to locate sources of malfunction.
• Replace or repair worn or damaged components (e.g., carburetors, alternators, magnetos, fuel controls, fuel pumps, oil pumps, engine-mounted gearboxes, compressor bleed valves) using hand tools, gauges, and testing equipment.
• Remove engine from aircraft using hoist or forklift truck, disassemble and inspect parts for wear, cracks, security, or other defects, repair or replace defective engine parts, and reassemble and install engine in aircraft.
• Adjust, repair, or replace electrical wiring systems and aircraft accessories.
• Perform preflight, thru-flight, and post-flight maintenance inspections.
• Perform miscellaneous duties to service aircraft, including flushing crankcase, cleaning screens and filters, greasing moving parts, and checking brakes.
• Supervise jacking and towing of aircraft.
• Document maintenance work performed in records and verify satisfactory completion.
• Service engines and airframe components at line stations, making repairs short of overhaul to maintain safe operating condition.
• Specialize in work, repair, and modification of structural, precision, and functional spare parts and assemblies, or engine repair as required.

Requirements

• Shift work is required; detachments are possible.
• Minimum three (3) years of actual and recent organizational-level F/A-18 A-G aircraft maintenance experience. Internal candidates at CFT NAS Oceana (VA993) may bypass the 3-year experience requirement by passing all three (3) required CDI qualification tests.
• Completion of Navy Aviation Structural Mechanics AM “A” School or FAA A&P License.
• Must obtain Collateral Duty Inspector qualification within 30 days of promotion/hire date.
• Knowledge and use of special tools/equipment required for assigned maintenance tasks.
• Must be physically able to perform all assigned duties, including standing, climbing, bending, and stooping for extended periods.
• Must meet physical requirements and pass any medical examinations related to daily tasks.
• Valid Virginia or North Carolina Driver’s license (if North Carolina resident).
• Must be able to obtain a favorable T3 Secret eligibility status and maintain facility credentials/authorization. U.S. citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization.
• Ability to read and interpret technical publications, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
• Work is performed primarily outdoors under all weather conditions, with exposure to loud noise and exhaust fumes.

Preferred Qualifications

• High School graduate or equivalent.
• Three (3) years prior F/A-18 A-G Collateral Duty Inspector/Quality Assurance Representative experience or FAA A&P License.
• Self-motivated with ability to work with minimum supervision.
• Experience with:
  • Paint & Final Finish.
  • Ramp Stamp (restricted/unrestricted).
  • F/A-18 Tire & Wheel, Hydraulic Contamination.
  • A/S32A-45 Tow Tractor.
  • A/M26U-4-4B NAN cart; A/M27T-14/15.
  • A/M32A-108; A/M24M-6 Power cart; AM37M-2 Hydraulic purifier.
  • A/S32A-44 Crane.
  • APU/Low Power Turn Operator.

Other Responsibilities

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is $37.57 per hour, plus $7.80 per hour (up to 40 hours per week) for Health & Welfare.
