About the Role

The Aircraft Mechanic 2 performs aircraft mechanical work of considerable difficulty in scheduled and unscheduled maintenance and repair of assigned aircraft. This position supports reciprocating- and turbine-powered, fixed-wing aircraft, including single-engine, multi-engine, and turbine aircraft, and may be assigned to aircraft requiring specialized training and experience. The role involves applying advanced technical expertise, sound judgment, and careful attention to safety in inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing, overhauling, testing, and returning aircraft to service while ensuring compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requirements, manufacturer maintenance manuals, service bulletins, airworthiness directives, and TDOT policies and procedures.

This position coordinates maintenance activities with pilots, vendors, FAA personnel, other State agencies, and facility support staff while maintaining complete and accurate aircraft records.

Responsibilities

• Lead and perform routine, special, scheduled, and unscheduled inspections of aircraft, engines, airframes, and components.
• Inspect turbine blades, cylinders, fuselage, wings, tail assemblies, and related components for corrosion, wear, warping, cracks, leaks, distortion, and other deficiencies using precision measuring instruments, FAA Inspection Authorization practices, and appropriate testing equipment.
• Diagnose, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair hydraulic, electrical, oil, transmission, drive, exhaust, flight-control, powerplant, fuel, and related aircraft systems.
• Study technical drawings, diagrams, maintenance manuals, and manufacturer specifications to identify causes of malfunctions and determine appropriate corrective action.
• Perform post-maintenance functional tests and operational checks to verify that installed or repaired components meet specifications and that aircraft systems operate safely.
• Adjust, align, and calibrate aircraft systems; reassemble and reinstall engines following repair or inspection; and support periodic disassembly and overhaul of aircraft components and powerplants.
• Coordinate non-destructive testing for corrosion, distortion, and invisible cracks in aircraft structures and components.
• Obtain fuel and oil samples and check for contamination.
• Accompany aircraft on flights when required to make in-flight adjustments and corrections and assist in confirming safe system performance.
• Operate and use specialized hand tools, electrical and hydraulic testing devices, propeller protractors, hoists, towing devices, ground-support equipment, and Department vehicles.
• Remove and install aircraft engines and components using hoists and fabricate defective sections or parts using metal-fabrication machines, saws, brakes, shears, and grinders when authorized.
• Clean, strip, prime, sand, prepare, and paint structural surfaces and materials.
• Examine aircraft components while working from ladders or elevated platforms and follow all applicable safety procedures for shop, ramp, and aircraft maintenance operations.
• Read and interpret maintenance manuals, specifications, airworthiness directives, service bulletins, supplemental type certificates, and instructions for continued airworthiness.
• Submit FAA Form 337 when required following major repairs or alterations and ensure FAA Inspection Authorization status is maintained in accordance with applicable regulations.
• Maintain and oversee aircraft maintenance records, historical documents, logbook entries, maintenance-manual libraries, flight-time tracking, fuel-storage-facility maintenance records, and aircraft maintenance man-hour reports.
• Review documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance and support forecasting and coordination of future aircraft maintenance.
• Serve as a primary liaison with aircraft manufacturers and technical representatives for troubleshooting and maintenance support; contract vendors for required aircraft maintenance; FAA maintenance inspectors; other State agencies; and building-maintenance vendors.
• Communicate with pilots and supervisors regarding maintenance issues, aircraft availability, work status, and scheduling priorities.
• Support continuous improvement and quality-management practices that improve the efficiency, reliability, and safety of aircraft maintenance operations.

Requirements

• Possession of both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license.
• Good moral character, as determined by investigation.
• Completion of a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority.
• Agreement to release all records involving criminal history to the appointing authority.
• Supply a fingerprint sample for a fingerprint-based criminal history records check.
• No conviction for a felony or discharge under any other than honorable conditions from any branch of the United States armed forces.
• Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license or ability to obtain one prior to appointment.

Driver Standards

For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not include any of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than 4 moving violations.

Pay

Monthly: $5,100.00 - $6,373.00
Annually: $61,200.00 - $76,476.00
