About the role

This position is responsible for repairing and testing air brake valves for railroad applications and installing and repairing air brake systems on locomotives.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety rules and procedures.
  • Perform air brake valve repair and testing as required by company specifications.
  • Perform air brake system installation and maintenance on locomotives.
  • Read schematics and perform shop math.
  • Correctly prepare and maintain records/reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Experience using hand tools, pneumatic hand tools, cutting torch, welders, and pipe threader.
  • Understand air brake schematics, brake valve diagrams, and part lists for valve repair and system installation on locomotives.
  • Perform physical requirements of a shop repair environment and working on locomotives.
  • Team player with a positive, can-do attitude.
  • Ability to follow orders and communicate well with fellow workers and management.
  • Ability to work well with others, desire to learn all aspects of air brake repair, and locomotive air brake system installation.
  • Ability to assess multiple tasks and develop a plan to complete them in a timely manner.

Skills

  • Language Skills: Read, analyze, and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, technical procedures, governmental regulations, and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence. Communicate effectively with groups of customers or employees.
  • Mathematical Skills: Add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Work Environment

The work environment involves regular exposure to outside weather conditions, including nights, holidays, and weekends. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and occasionally to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level is usually moderate.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to stand and walk.
  • Occasionally required to sit; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma (or equivalent).
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment in a job-related field.
