Air Permitting Engineering Intern

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) protects public health and the environment by supplying clean drinking water, collecting and treating wastewater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 5,500 employees. DEP delivers more than 1.1 billion gallons per day of the highest quality drinking water to 8.3 million NYC residents and more than 1 million people in Upstate New York and has a wastewater conveyance and treatment system capable of processing over 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater per day to protect the environment and the city's surrounding waterways.

About the role

The Bureau of Environmental Compliance's mission is the enforcement of environmental laws and regulations, which affect the health and safety of the public and environment. Specifically, the bureau enforces the City's Asbestos regulations as well as the Air and Noise Codes. The Environmental Engineering Intern will perform technical duties in support of the New York City Air Pollution Control Program.

Responsibilities

• Examine application requests to register and operate combustion and industrial process equipment.
• Perform field inspections, including use of testing instrumentation of equipment to be permitted.
• Prepare technical reports related to field inspections and other technical and regulatory matters.
• Inspect premises and construction sites in connection with issuance of pertinent permits.
• Inspect installations to assure adherence to specifications, plans, and work permits.
• Conduct engineering analysis and write preliminary reports of new technologies presented to the Department.
• May also be assigned other duties related to stationary air pollution source control.

Requirements

• Valid NYS Driver's License is mandatory.
• Ability to climb stairs and ladders and engage in extensive walking at facilities being inspected, including those under construction and renovation, while following all mandated safety procedures.
• Familiarity with various computer software programs.

Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering from an accredited college; or
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in environmental, fire protection, chemical, mechanical, petroleum, aeronautical, or materials engineering technology and two years of full-time satisfactory experience in environmental engineering work.

Preferred Skills

• A baccalaureate degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or environmental engineering.

Pay

$59,747.00 – $68,709.00
