Air Monitoring Site Operator - Central Valley
About the Role
The Air Monitoring South Section (AMSS) within the Monitoring and Laboratory Division has an opening for an Air Pollution Specialist (APS) based in Bakersfield, CA. Under the supervision of an Air Resources Supervisor I, the APS performs technical field and office work, including operating, calibrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting ambient air monitoring instruments.
Responsibilities
- Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot ambient air monitoring instruments
- Review and validate air quality data for submittal to the US EPA AQS Data Repository
- Perform quality control activities and maintain technical records li>Install new equipment and assist with special projects as needed
- Travel regularly to air monitoring stations throughout Kern County and nearby counties for field maintenance, instrument calibrations, and upkeep of assigned monitoring stations
- Represent CARB in joint operations and group presentations, sharing technical expertise and responding to inquiries
- Prepare standard operating procedures
- Collaborate with CARB staff, local air districts, and the US EPA to support California's ambient air monitoring program
- Partner with equipment manufacturers to evaluate new technologies that improve ambient monitoring capabilities
Requirements
- Valid California Driver's License (CDL) with CDL number, class, expiration date, and any endorsements/restrictions provided
- Medical Clearance prior to being hired
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) describing how the applicant’s skills, knowledge, abilities, education, training, and experience qualify them for the position (1 page, Arial 12 pt font, single space, 1 inch margins)

Salary
$5,918.00 - $11,455.00 (depending on classification level: A, B, or C)
