AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

About the role

You will serve as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic in the Production Resources Department 900 of Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Duties

• Install, modify, repair, and test air conditioning and refrigeration systems associated with equipment.
• Perform work involving system components, electrical controls, and mechanical assemblies required for proper system operation.
• Determine system configuration, component placement, and installation sequence in accordance with technical guidance and established specifications.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections and services to ensure continued system reliability.
• Work on a variety of systems associated with shipyard facilities and vessels.
• Work from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals to determine system configuration, component placement, and repair methods.

Requirements

• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
• Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
• New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
• Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
• You will be required to repair and perform installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and in hard-to-reach locations.
• Work requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
• You will be required to handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment weighing up to approximately 50 pounds and occasionally handle heavier items with assistance.
• Work is performed inside and outside and is often dirty, dusty, and greasy.
• Mechanics may be exposed to temperature extremes and to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and other hazards associated with mechanical and refrigeration systems.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
• This position requires rotating shift work.
• You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.

• Experience selecting proper material for each particular purpose.
• Experience displaying ability to use and maintain tools, instruments, and related equipment as appropriate to one or more lines of work.
• Experience performing using knowledge of all materials used, implementing ability to select proper material for each particular purpose.
• Experience interpreting blueprints, sketches, docking worksheets, and job orders to perform the duties of the AC&R.
• Experience managing, assembling, making, installing, testing, repairing, etc.
