AIR CONDITIONING EQUIPMENT MECHANIC

About the Role

This position is for an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic within the Public Works Department of NAVFAC Engineering Command Mid-Atlantic.

Responsibilities

• Diagnose, locate, and repair malfunctions in the main operating mechanical components of large, complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration (HVAC) systems.
• Test for refrigerant leaks and use a refrigerant recovery/recycling station to safely reclaim, recycle, and store refrigerant in accordance with Environmental Protection Agency standards before making repairs.
• Repair HVAC systems and components in structures such as warehouses, hangars, hospitals, large office buildings, and complexes.
• Conduct visual and audible examinations of equipment components using prescribed test procedures and equipment to explore probable reasons for equipment failure.
• Use trade tools and test equipment, including voltage, amperage, and ohm meters, electronic refrigerant leak detectors, micron vacuum analyzers and pumps, electronic temperature gauges, and capacitor analyzers.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience over the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your level of knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies in the following job elements:

• Understanding of principles and theories of air conditioning and refrigeration, such as the refrigeration cycle, heat transfer laws, use of refrigerant tables, airflow calculation, and pressure-temperature characteristics for different systems to locate problems.
• Understanding of correcting malfunctions and skill in making repairs to a variety of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
• Understanding of the refrigeration cycle in commercial and industrial systems to locate and check elements controlling low-side and high-side pressure, cooling unit temperatures, liquid and suction line temperatures, and running time of mechanisms.
• Understanding of HVAC system components, including compressors (gear, reciprocating, centrifugal, or rotary pump) and various refrigerant controls (low/high-pressure side floats, thermostatic expansion valves, capillary or choke types, and volume/quantity-based controls). Knowledge of systems with complex motor controls such as hermetically sealed motors, pressure controls, thermostatic motor controls, defrosting controls, relays, and overload protection.
• Understanding of power sources used with combinations of pulleys, belts, horsepower capacity, and tensioners, and the skill to conduct visual and audible examinations of equipment components to diagnose failures.
• Understanding of analog control systems or knowledge of direct digital controls (DDC) for automated HVAC system control.
• Understanding of DDC devices and software, including programmable logic controllers, computers, and peripherals that provide a centralized, network-oriented approach.

Schedule

• This position requires rotating shift work and often involves irregular hours.
