Role Overview

As a Research Scientist in Artificial Intelligence, you will lead cutting-edge projects in various AI and machine learning areas.

Responsibilities

  • Lead AI Projects: Take the lead on projects in deep learning, reinforcement learning, lifelong learning, and other AI/ML areas, developing and applying AI techniques to solve complex analytical problems.

  • Develop Algorithms: Design and prove mathematical properties of algorithms, conduct experiments to demonstrate their impact, and evaluate their effectiveness.

  • Embed Research in Systems: Ensure that your research algorithms are integrated into usable systems, making them accessible and impactful.

  • Communicate Research: Publish your research findings in top-tier conferences and journals, sharing your insights with the broader academic community.

Preferred Education and Technical Expertise

  • Doctorate Degree: A strong educational background is required, with a focus on PL/SE/FM, AI/ML, and related fields.

  • Deep Expertise in AI/ML: A solid understanding of major subfields in AI/ML, along with a strong foundation in mathematical fundamentals and evaluation methods.

  • Hands-on Experience: Practical experience with deep learning frameworks and modern GPU programming, demonstrating the ability to embed research algorithms in usable systems.

  • Research Communication: A proven track record of publishing research findings in top-tier conferences and journals, including POPL, OOPSLA, PLDI, CAV, NeurIPS, CVPR, ICML, and ICLR.

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

  • Lead Research: Experience leading projects at the intersection of programming language design, compiler design, and model hosting, proving mathematical properties of algorithms, and collaborating with peers to ensure practical impact.

  • Disseminate Research: Ability to position and embed your research within a larger industrial research program, including IBM's Granite language, vision, and speech models.

  • Collaborate: Strong collaboration skills, working closely with researchers and engineers in reinforcement learning, deep learning, online learning, LLM training, and other AI/ML areas.

  • Develop Models and Conduct Experiments: Conduct experiments to demonstrate the properties and impact of AI algorithms, ensuring they are both theoretically sound and practically applicable.
