ABB · Cary, NC · 3 days ago
Information Technology$20–$34/hrFull-time

About the role

At ABB, we help industries run leaner and cleaner—and every person here makes that happen. You’ll be empowered to lead, supported to grow, and proud of the impact we create together. This position reports to the IS Manager. The work model is onsite/hybrid in Cary, NC. Interns must have reliable transportation to and from the worksite during the summer. After the summer, the role continues part-time, remotely, for about six months alongside your studies.

Responsibilities

  • Build the AI layer's agents, tools, and data connectors in Python, reading from business systems through APIs and SQL.
  • Design multi-step agent workflows in LangGraph or a comparable framework, with human approval built in; work with read-only access and sandbox environments—nothing writes to a live system without human approval.
  • Determine the right retrieval for each question: a database query, an API call, or a document search—and know which one fits.
  • Build evaluation sets, measure whether answers are correct, and improve them.
  • Ship small pieces every week and demo them to the team and to business users.
  • Use AI coding assistants openly and be able to explain every line you commit.
  • Document what you build and learn so the next person can pick it up.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a master's program, or in the third or fourth year of a bachelor's program, in computer science, mathematics, data science, or industrial engineering in the United States. Master's students preferred.
  • Available to continue part-time, remotely, for about six months after the summer, alongside your studies.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future.
  • Python you've shipped: a project someone else can run, with git and tests (include a link with your application).
  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs: model APIs, tool calling, structured outputs.
  • SQL, including joins across multiple tables.
  • A working understanding of REST APIs and JSON.

Skills

Valued, not required:

  • LangGraph or another agent framework
  • Embeddings, vector search, and RAG
  • MCP
  • Knowledge graphs (for example Neo4j)
  • A cloud platform
  • Any exposure to supply chain, manufacturing, or ERP concepts

Benefits

We want you to bring your full self to work—your ideas, your energy, your ambition. You’ll have the tools and freedom to grow your skills, shape your path, and take on challenges that matter. Here, your work creates impact you can see and feel, every day. Note: Internships at ABB within the United States are not eligible for company-sponsored medical benefits, 401(k) contributions, or paid time off.

Pay

The hourly rate is determined by factors such as the successful applicant's qualifications, graduation year, and experience. This position is expected to pay between $20 – $34 per hour.

Schedule

Onsite/hybrid in Cary, NC for the summer; part-time remote for approximately six months thereafter alongside your studies.
