AI Engineer

About the role

Detroit Defense is seeking an AI Engineer to design, build, and integrate intelligent systems into software products. The role involves embedding conversational AI, connecting language models to tools/data, and applying machine learning for classification, prediction, and simulation.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement tool/function calling for AI assistants
• Write, test, and refine prompts; evaluate LLM accuracy
• Build, train, and evaluate ML models
• Collaborate with software engineers for AI integration
• Use Git for version control
• Document work and communicate results
• Support deployment, testing, and iteration

Requirements

• Required: Bachelor's degree in CS, Data Science, ML, Engineering, Math, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• Experience integrating LLMs via APIs (function/tool calling, structured outputs)
• Foundation in ML and data science (supervised learning, model evaluation, statistics)
• Working knowledge of Git and collaborative development
• Strong problem-solving skills
• U.S. person able to obtain/maintain Secret clearance

Qualifications

• Preferred: Proficiency in Python and/or C#, Experience building chat/assistant interfaces or agentic systems, Familiarity with tool-calling/agent frameworks, RAG, vector databases, Experience defining evaluations for LLM reliability, End-to-end model deployment experience (internship/academic/project), Exposure to APIs, testing, CI/CD, containerization, Use of GitLab for issue tracking and SCM, Familiarity with secure AI/compute environments

Skills

• Proficiency in Python and/or C#
• Familiarity with tool-calling/agent frameworks, RAG, vector databases
• Experience defining evaluations for LLM reliability
• End-to-end model deployment experience (internship/academic/project)
• Exposure to APIs, testing, CI/CD, containerization
