About the Research

The CCDC ARL Center for Agile Materials Manufacturing Science (CAMMS) additive manufacturing (AM) laboratory conducts state-of-the-art research focusing on developing Army-relevant metallics, polymerics, and hybrid materials for additive manufacturing (AM) feedstocks. This research supports the Army Modernization Priorities, including lightweighting, fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfers, and reaction dynamics.

Research involves establishing and expanding high-fidelity pre-build, in-situ, ex-situ, and post-build modular AM digital tools and integrating them into an AI-based deep machining learning (ML) platform to enhance real-time closed-loop predictability and manufacturability. The goal is to improve Army AM certification and qualification readiness and enable expeditionary agile manufacturing at the point of need.

About WMRD

The Weapons and Materials Research Directorate (WMRD) enhances weapon lethality and survivability through research in energetic materials dynamics, propulsion/flight physics, projectile warhead mechanics, terminal effects phenomena, armor/survivability technologies, environmental chemistry, and advanced materials for various military applications.

About ARL-RAP

The Army Research Laboratory Research Associateship Program (ARL-RAP) aims to engage creative and highly trained scientists and engineers from academia and industry in addressing Army-specific scientific and technical challenges. Participants work on projects that align with ARL's research areas and contribute to the development of technologies supporting future operational needs.

A Complete Application Includes:

  • Curriculum Vitae or Resume

  • Three Reference Forms

    • An email with a link to the reference form will be available in Zintellect after completing the online application. Applicants should send this email to the selected references.

  • Transcripts

    • Transcripts verifying degree receipt must be submitted with the application. Unofficial copies are acceptable.

Research Proposal Submission

If selected by an advisor, participants must write a research proposal for submission to the ARL-RAP review panel. The proposal should:

  • Relate to a specific ARL opportunity

  • Have a clear objective and defined outcome

  • Outline the research direction and expected duration

  • Include background and motivation for the research

  • Reference relevant published work to strengthen the proposal

A link to upload the proposal will be provided to the applicant once the advisor makes their selection.
