Afterschool Coordinator (West Side YMCA)

About the role

The YMCA of Greater New York empowers youth, improves health, and strengthens community through programs and services at 24 branches serving more than half a million New Yorkers. The Afterschool Coordinator will lead academic enhancement and enrichment, ensuring alignment with school goals and Common Core standards while fostering a safe, engaging environment for school-age children.

Responsibilities

• Direct programs for designated grade bands (K–5 or 6–8), ensuring age-appropriate activities and compliance with DYCD requirements.
• Implement Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) best practices and design engaging activities that support holistic student development.
• Integrate programs with community needs and ensure accessibility for diverse participants.
• Develop recruitment and retention strategies to maintain high attendance and sustained engagement.
• Use quantitative measures, quality monitoring tools, and external evaluations to assess program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
• Analyze data and assessment results to identify trends, measure outcomes, and refine program quality to meet or exceed goals.
• Build and leverage partnerships with local organizations, funders, and evaluators to enhance services and resources.
• Promote mental wellness by training staff to provide supportive environments and identify participants needing referrals.
• Select and oversee an evidence-based SEL curriculum adaptable to dynamic after-school settings (e.g., COMPASS Elementary or SONYC).
• Collaborate with host school administration to align STEAM and Literacy initiatives with academic goals.
• Maintain accurate program documentation per OCFS, DOH, DYCD, and YMCA standards.
• Communicate YMCA core values and program goals to participants and caregivers, and maintain positive relationships with families through regular updates.
• Participate in training, meetings, and special events, and adhere to all regulatory and organizational standards.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s Degree in Education preferred.
• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children under the age of 13.
• Current Pediatrics CPR or First Aid certifications preferred.
• General proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfort working with diverse youth and adults.

Schedule

Y Afterschool programs operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during public-school breaks.
