Aftercare Counselor, Team Leader - Cranbrook Schools

About the Role

Founded by Detroit philanthropists George and Ellen Booth in 1904, Cranbrook Educational Community is one of the world’s leading centers of education, science, and art. The Aftercare Counselor, Team Leader ensures the safety, security, and well-being of Early Childhood Center (ECC) students in grades Pre-Kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten, Brookside students in Senior Kindergarten through 5th grade, or Middle School students in 6th through 8th grade. Cranbrook Schools' Aftercare program is an extension of the learning environment: a time for students to make decisions about completing homework, participate in craft projects, play, work in groups, and wind down their academic day before returning to their families.

Responsibilities

• Implement the daily program under the direction of the Aftercare Supervisor/Program Administrator and Director of Special & Summer Programs.
• Prepare materials, supplies, and set-up of the learning environment.
• Administer use of Procare to sign in students and correspond with parents.
• Share responsibility for the ordered arrangement of the learning environment and general housekeeping.
• Maintain daily records of student arrivals, departures, and enrichment activities.
• Complete and/or review Incident/Behavior reports for incidents during program hours.
• Review and retain up-to-date knowledge of student allergies, medical conditions, or pertinent mental/emotional health information (in accordance with the school counselor).
• Assist with preparation and implementation of daily snacks.
• Participate in set-up and clean-up of Aftercare spaces each day.
• Lead Aftercare Counselors assigned to supervised program areas.
• Share arrival, dismissal, and playground supervision.
• Assist with moving students safely between areas or buildings.
• Arrange sport activities appropriate to the season and available spaces, including setting up and putting away athletic equipment.
• Treat children and parents with dignity and respect, maintaining positive discipline through nonjudgmental language and tone.
• Help children become aware of their roles as integral group members.
• Maintain open and positive communication between team members.
• Maintain awareness and appreciation for the needs of children.
• Maintain current CPR/First Aid training.
• Adhere to attendance, punctuality, and performance standards in Cranbrook’s employee handbook.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Assist the Special and Summer Programs Program Administrator/Aftercare Supervisor in supervising Aftercare Counselors, including completion of Performance Annual Reviews.
• Communicate problems at the After School site to the Program Administrator/Aftercare Supervisor, including staff absences, equipment needs, and parent or student issues.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of professional training or practical experience in primary school education or childcare.
• One (1) year of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
• Maintenance of current CPR/First Aid training.
• Ability to relate well to children and team members.
