After School Program Staff
The Boys & Girls Club of Clifton, located in the third most diverse city in America by languages spoken, has been serving the community since 1947. We provide quality youth development programs for youth aged 3-18, supporting over 6,000 youth annually. Our mission is to empower and inspire all young people, especially those who need us most, to realize their full potential as responsible, caring, and productive citizens.
About the role
Under the direction of the Program Director, the Youth Development Professional implements after-school programs and activities designed to nurture and develop the potential of Club members. This role involves fostering a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment, serving as a role model and mentor, and ensuring the safety and well-being of all participants.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement programs that nurture the potential of youth.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful environment that encourages youth voice and participation.
- Monitor youth behavior and ensure safety protocols are followed at all times.
- Serve as a role model, mentor, and advocate for young people.
- Participate in staff meetings, training, and professional development activities.
- Manage groups of students in an out-of-school-time environment with a supportive, nurturing, and inclusive approach.
- Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled work shifts; complete daily time sheets.
- Avoid using personal electronic devices during work shifts.
- Maintain a professional appearance and customer-centered approach.
- Assist senior staff to ensure successful outcomes for the Club’s operations and mission.
- Contribute to implementing and carrying out daily programs and activities.

- Manage student conflict, analyze situations, and take appropriate action without waiting for direction.
- Provide guidance and mentoring to help members make appropriate choices regarding educational, personal, physical, social, emotional, and career decisions.
- Ensure a healthy and safe environment for members, maintaining facilities, equipment, and supplies.
- Maintain confidentiality of members, employees, and Club information.
- Oversee proper record keeping and reporting, including daily attendance and incident reports.
- Report any suspected abuse to the Program Director and Site Coordinator, ensuring proper steps in reporting and documentation are completed.
- Adhere to all policies and procedures.
- Assume other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Previous experience working with children.
- Must attain CPR/First Aid and Child Abuse certifications within 90 days of hire.
- Must pass a background check, including two NJDCF required checks and two organizational checks.
- Must pass a drug/alcohol test and comply with a “Drug Free” policy.
- Must provide valid identification for I-9 employment eligibility verification.
- Flexible and able to adapt to changes in the work environment.
- Access to reliable transportation for commuting and program-related activities.
- Understanding of the Club’s mission and values.
- Ability to critically assess situations, solve problems, and work effectively under stress.
- Ability to understand and carry out varied instructions and procedures with minimal supervision.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with employees, management, students, and families.
Physical Demands
- Standing, walking, occasional running/jogging during programs.
- Leaning, bending, and sitting.
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.
Schedule
Academic year (September through June): Monday through Friday, 2:45 PM – 6:00 PM. Up to 25 hours per week. Some evening and weekend hours may be offered periodically.
Professional Development
- Complete 12 hours of training annually, as required by NJDCF.
- Majority of trainings provided during onboarding; additional training may be required online or in-person, including outside traditional work hours.
- Staff are expected to attend all scheduled trainings; reasonable accommodations will be made with prior notification.
- Reimbursement for reasonable expenses related to professional development, with proper documentation.
Working Conditions
- Primary work location: Clifton Clubhouse (181 Colfax Ave, Clifton, NJ 07013).
- Occasional offsite trips and activities requiring work outside the Club.
- Regular communication with staff, students, school staff, and occasionally parents.
Pay
$15.92 hourly ($15.38 – $17.25 range).
