Essential and Other Important Responsibilities

  • Maintain clear, effective and timely communication and collaborative working relationship with supervisory staff.
  • Supervise program participants.
  • Supervise and maintain an appropriate student to staff ratio.
  • Promote and ensure a safe and positive environment for all program participants.
  • Provide academic assistance to program participants.
  • Plan and implement site curriculum and recreational and enrichment activities.
  • Utilize positive guidance techniques and appropriate behavior support for program participants; adhere and enforce all rules consistently and equitably.
  • Monitor and report any observations or concerns regarding the needs and problems of participants to supervisory staff.
  • Assist in daily set-up and cleanup; maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment for participants.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City and School District employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
  • Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs and procedures.
  • Attend meetings and training sessions as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of: Practices and techniques for favorable public relations. Practices and techniques to achieve positive group cooperation in expanded learning programs. Positive behavior guidance techniques. Practices to support participants’ social-emotional development. Instructional strategies and techniques for effective, age-appropriate academic and enrichment programming. Light custodial maintenance techniques.
  • Ability To Read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including the ability to follow and to interpret written instructions. Perform basic arithmetic. Think clearly, quickly and accurately in emergencies.
  • Foster an environment of inclusivity, respect and welcome for all. Maintain an environment that is physically and emotionally safe. Establish and maintain effective professional relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Work various locations as assigned. Work various shifts including days, evenings, weekends and holidays as assigned. Prepare reports and records as required. Lift and carry heavy objects. Run forward, backward and laterally. Perform light custodial maintenance tasks. Travel from worksite to worksite as needed.

Experience and Training Guidelines

  • Some volunteer or paid work experience with children is desirable.
  • Knowledge of subject areas taught in specific assignment, such as those in Transitional Kindergarten through Middle School, age-appropriate activities, or ability to learn subjects and activities quickly is desirable.
  • A High School diploma or GED equivalency, supported by forty-eight (48) units of higher education or successfully pass a local assessment of knowledge or skills that demonstrates the equivalent of the above requirements.

Required Certificates

  • Adult and Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED Certificate. Certifications must have an in-person, instructor-led skills session with hands and breaths training.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Mobility: frequent performance moderate manual labor; frequent sitting, walking or standing for long periods of time; occasional bending, twisting, kneeling or squatting.
  • Lifting: frequent lifting up to 25 pounds; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision.
  • Dexterity: frequent grasping, holding, and reaching.
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person.
  • Emotional/ Psychological: frequent coworker contact; occasional working alone.
  • Environmental: occasional exposure to loud noises and large groups of people.

Working Conditions

  • Conditions will vary depending on assignment. Work may also be performed in a typical outdoor environment on a year-round basis subject to street or field noise and year round weather conditions.
  • Duties may include some recreation-related field noise.
  • Work often occurs at remote locations.
  • Positions may require some overtime and weekend work and travel is rare.

Sick Leave and Retirement Information

  • Total contribution of 7.5% - employee pays 3.75% of wages (pre-tax) and the City pays 3.75%.
  • Employees employed with the City of Modesto for six (6) full pay periods or more receive sick leave credit at the rate of twenty-four (24) hours or three (3) days per calendar year, per AB 1522.
  • Public Agency Retirement Services Alternate Retirement System Plan (PARS ARS).

  • This position will work with children and may require you to act quickly in an emergency. This could range from responding to a medical emergency or handling urgent campus situations. Based on the physical requirements for responding to that kind of emergency, are you able to perform that function?
  • This position is utilized at multiple City of Modesto schools and may require you to provide transportation from site to site. Can you fulfill this requirement?
