Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineer 2/3
Relocation assistance may be available. Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain a Secret clearance. Travel required: 10% of the time.
About the role
Northrop Grumman Marine Systems specializes in the analysis, development, manufacture, assembly, and testing of missile launching and handling systems, propulsion, and power generation systems for naval surface ships and submarines. We are seeking an Aeronautical/Mechanical Engineer 2/3 to join a highly talented, motivated, and collaborative Performance Analysis team in Sunnyvale, California.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to both current and future launcher programs through the development and application of physics-based modeling and simulation software. The candidate will assist in developing complex mathematical models, heat transfer, hydraulic, and structural (FEA) performance assessment models for missile launching systems. Models focus on non-linear structural dynamics, gas dynamics, hydrodynamics, kinematics, heat transfer, and fluid/structure interaction—elements required to accurately predict launch and shock performance. The candidate will also perform test data analysis for missile launch and shock tests, formally document results (e.g., technical reports, publications, presentations), and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
Responsibilities
- Develop complex mathematical models for missile launching systems, including non-linear structural dynamics, gas dynamics, hydrodynamics, kinematics, heat transfer, and fluid/structure interaction.
- Create and apply heat transfer, hydraulic, and structural (FEA) performance assessment models.
- Perform test data analysis for missile launch and shock tests.
- Document results through technical reports, publications, and presentations.
- Communicate findings effectively with internal and external customers.
Qualifications
Level 2
- Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline with a minimum of 2 years of relevant industry experience in modeling and simulation, test data reduction, or statistical analysis.
- Master’s degree in the same fields with no experience.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language (C/C++, Python, MATLAB, or FORTRAN).
- Strong writing skills for technical documentation and communication.
- Must work onsite 4 days a week at the Sunnyvale site.
- Must be a U.S. citizen able to obtain a U.S. Government security clearance.
Level 3
- Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Physics, or a closely related technical discipline with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience in modeling and simulation, test data reduction, or statistical analysis.
- Master’s degree in the same fields with 3 years of relevant industry experience.
- PhD in the same fields with no experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s or PhD in Mechanical or Aeronautical/Aerospace Engineering.
- Knowledge in physics-based modeling and software development.
- Expertise in statistical analysis and uncertainty quantification of large data sets.
- Knowledge in structural dynamics, fluid-structure interaction (FSI), conjugate heat transfer (CHT), multi-phase flows, or combustion processes.
- Experience in test data reduction and analysis.
- Active security clearance.
