Purpose Of Position

Responsible for the safe and efficient operation of single axle trucks and related automotive construction and maintenance equipment over 26,000 GVW. There are various unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks that will be performed, in conjunction with vehicle or equipment operation.

Essential Functions

  • Operates various types of single-axle trucks and related equipment over 26,000 GVW, to include front end loaders, backhoe, skid loaders & sweepers on a limited basis.
  • Performs construction, general upkeep and maintenance activities to include, but not limited to, snow removal, mowing, lining, grading, spraying of chemicals, concrete work, and other activities related to assigned equipment operation.
  • Paints curbs, crosswalks, posts and street lines; sets up barricades and directs traffic as needed.
  • Establishes grades and sets concrete forms, pours and finishes concrete; seals cracks in concrete, performs street and curb cuts and asphalt repairs.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on assigned equipment and tools.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs on guardrails as needed.
  • Operate power, hand and electrical tools and equipment.
  • Completes and maintains records to include, but not limited to, work orders, chemical usage reports, maintenance reports and grave location records.
  • Will be required to perform duties on an on-call basis as needed.

Marginal Functions

Performs related work as directed or as the situation dictates. Assists other departments on various projects as directed or as the situation dictates.

Essential Knowledge, Experience And Ability

  • Knowledge and skill in the operation, maintenance and use of trucks and related small construction equipment and tools.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operations of trucks and other single axle automotive equipment.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations and ability to learn and maintain a good working knowledge of the geography of the City.
  • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous manual labor and operate automotive equipment for long hours under varying and sometimes adverse conditions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the general public.

Essential Education, Certification And/Or Licenses

  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.
  • Must obtain a Class B Commercial Drivers’ License with air brake endorsement within 6 months from the date of hire and maintain throughout the course of employment.
  • Must obtain Commercial Drivers’ License tanker endorsement (N) within 6 months of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.
  • Must obtain NE pesticide applicator’s license within 18 months from the date of hire and maintain it throughout the course of employment.

Essential Physical Demands And Typical Working Conditions

  • Work is performed indoors and outdoors and requires a considerable amount of physical activity, including extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, kneeling, bending, crouching, reaching, stooping and climbing.
  • An incumbent must have the ability to transport themselves to and from various locations throughout the City and surrounding jurisdictions and must have the ability to maneuver over rough terrain and construction sites on foot.
  • Duties also require the ability to tolerate an indoor and outdoor work environment that includes contact with or exposure to dirt, dust, noise, poor lighting and inclement weather conditions.
  • An incumbent must have the ability to frequently lift and/or carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighing up to 50 pounds weighing up to 50 lbs., and to occasionally lift and/or carry equipment, supplies and other materials weighting up to 100 lbs.
  • An incumbent must also possess the hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity necessary to use hands and arms to finger, handle, grasp and feel; climb into, out of and under vehicles; and operate the following: vehicles, computers, tools, and any other equipment that is used to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Work hours may occasionally be required in times of darkness.
  • Noise level is usually moderate.
  • Communication abilities include the ability to talk and hear with normal ranges.
  • Work requires interaction with the general public and may be stressful when dealing with irate citizens and/or time constraints.
