Advocacy & Prevention Specialist - Queensbury
About the Role
The Advocacy & Prevention Specialist assists survivors in dealing with the immediate and long-term impact of victimization and works in the community to offer programming intended to prevent sexual violence. The Specialist serves as the designated campus advocate for student survivors going through Title IX processes, acting as advisor of choice when requested. This role involves direct services to a caseload of clients, high-quality prevention education, and coverage of the Survivor Support Services (SSS) 24/7 hotline, including mandatory after-hours on-call time. Flexibility in work schedule is essential, with some evenings and weekends required. This is a full-time, community-facing position involving travel within the region about 50% of the time.
Responsibilities
- Direct Services (50%)
- Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, and advocacy services to sexual assault survivors and victims of crime.
- Offer medical, criminal justice, and personal accompaniment services when requested or needed.
- Provide campus-specific advocacy through Title IX processes.
- Staff the 24-hour hotline and assist with support groups.
- Develop initial case plans and ongoing advocacy strategies.
- Coordinate supportive activities for individuals and groups.
- Assist in completing crime victim compensation applications.
- Education & Outreach (25%)
- Complete facilitator trainings for various curricula offered by SSS.
- Facilitate internally and externally developed curricula for youth, adult, and professional audiences.
- Prepare materials, including outreach supplies, handouts, and evaluation surveys.
- Collect demographic and required data from workshop and training participants.
- Promote and engage in outreach programs for community members, organizations, parents, and professionals.
- Organize education and outreach events on campus in collaboration with campus and community partners.
- Stay current on research and participate in ongoing training related to bystander intervention, trauma-informed care, and prevention of sexual assault, dating violence, intimate partner violence, child sexual abuse, sex trafficking, and digital abuse.
- Community Engagement (10%)
- Develop cooperative working relationships with other agencies, organizations, and campus offices.
- Inform key professional groups about available services for crime victims, including sexual assault, interpersonal violence, and homicide.
- Plan and prepare exhibits for community events and assist in promoting key awareness initiatives, including Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
- Support the administration, promotion, and creation of the program’s social media platforms.
- Administrative (10%)
- Maintain DOH Rape Crisis Counselor/Advocate certification through mandatory continuing education.
- Keep service data, create reports for funded projects, and meet grant specifications.
- Support the manager in revising and updating workshops as needed.
- Conduct regular curricula reviews to ensure programs are inclusive, accessible, and accurate.
- Maintain case files and prepare monthly and quarterly statistical reports.
- Provide office coverage as assigned and attend staff meetings.
- Participate in program planning and evaluation.
- Assist the county coordinator in developing and maintaining community-agency relations.
- Perform other duties as assigned within a team-based work environment.
- Volunteer Coordination (5%)
- Assist in the recruitment, training, and support of volunteer staff.
- Coordinate volunteer coverage of the 24-hour Crisis Hotline, including evenings and weekends.
- Provide assistance and consultation for volunteers as needed or requested.
- Participate in volunteer evaluation.
