About the role
The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is nationally recognized as a model state-wide public defender system with an exceptional training and education program. Our defense teams ensure the criminal justice process is fair, results are just, and individual liberties are protected. We are seeking an experienced staff attorney to join a criminal defense team in the Boyd Trial Office. Ideal candidates have demonstrated a commitment to serving underprivileged and vulnerable communities, possess criminal defense experience, and exhibit strong planning, organizational, and teamwork skills.
Although medical cannabis has been legalized in Kentucky, employees in this position are prohibited from using it due to other applicable state or federal laws.
Responsibilities
- Represent criminal defendants in district court vigorously, effectively, ethically, and with integrity.
- Conduct client interviews and maintain detailed case notes.
- Research legal issues and draft clear, concise motions.
- Obtain case knowledge through discovery and investigation to advise clients on disposition.
- Develop case theories consistent with facts and law.
- Try appropriate cases when necessary.
- Perform duties in office, courtroom, and client facilities; travel is required.
Requirements
- Admitted to practice law in good standing in Kentucky or eligible under Kentucky Supreme Court Rules (SCR 2.111, 2.112, or 2.117).
- Must maintain licensure and credentials for the duration of employment.
- One year of experience as a licensed attorney in law practice, supervised practice under SCR 2.116, or a combination totaling one year.
Pay
$57,509.52 – $86,264.16 annually
Working Conditions
Duties are performed primarily in office and courtroom settings, with occasional client visits in various facilities. Travel is required.
