About the role

The Kentucky Department of Public Advocacy (DPA) is nationally recognized as a model statewide public defender system with an exceptional training and education program. Our defense teams ensure the criminal justice process is fair, results are just, and individual liberties are protected. We are seeking an experienced advocacy attorney to join the criminal defense team in the Owensboro Trial Office. Ideal candidates have demonstrated a desire to help the most vulnerable in their communities, possess criminal defense experience, and exhibit strong planning and organizational skills. The role involves working collaboratively with a defense team including attorneys, investigators, alternative sentencing workers, and administrative staff.

Responsibilities

• Represent criminal defendants in District Court cases vigorously, effectively, ethically, and with integrity.
• Conduct client interviews and maintain detailed notes and records of pertinent case facts.
• Research legal issues and draft clear, concise motions.
• Obtain knowledge of the case through discovery and investigation to provide informed advice to clients regarding disposition.
• Develop a theory of the case consistent with the facts and the law.
• Prepare and try appropriate cases.
• Perform duties primarily in office and courtroom settings; travel is required.

Note: Although medical cannabis is legalized in Kentucky, employees in this position are prohibited from using it due to other applicable state or federal laws.

Requirements

• Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with Kentucky Supreme Court Rules SCR 2.111, SCR 2.112, or SCR 2.117.
• Must maintain all required licensure, certifications, or credentials for the duration of employment and notify the agency of any lapse, suspension, revocation, or restriction.

Qualifications

• One year of experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law or one year of supervised practice under Kentucky Supreme Court Rule (SCR) 2.116, or a combination totaling at least one year of experience.

Working Conditions

Duties are performed primarily in office or courtroom settings but may include client visits in various facilities. Travel is required.

Probationary Period

This position has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
