About the role

The Financial Expert Advisor provides financial guidance and subject-matter expertise to support decision-making within a healthcare organization. This role focuses on financial planning and performance improvement initiatives that deliver on plan. The advisor partners with executive leadership, clinical teams, and finance departments to enhance financial sustainability, optimize resource utilization, and ensure alignment with industry best practices.

Advises business units on financial performance and the impact of decisions, considering downstream outcomes from changes. Uses expertise to address large-scale, cross-departmental problems affecting financial results. Partners with operational leadership within the region and other IU Health business units to identify growth and revenue opportunities leveraging region- and facility-specific services.

Creates executive-level reporting packages to communicate financial or other information on costs, prices, expenses, revenues, and various clinical and operational measures to make recommendations. Analyzes diverse sets of data—financial, operational, clinical, and economic—to support strategic and operational decisions. Serves as a trusted financial resource to operational leaders, providing financial reporting and analysis, expense management, operational improvement, and evaluation of growth opportunities.

Combines strong relationships, analysis, and risk-conscious planning to ensure the unit's financial plan is realized. Interfaces with both leadership and front-line team members to execute organizational development strategy and drive change initiatives. Partners with Assistant CFOs, CFOs, and regional leadership teams to drive actions related to long-range financial planning and the annual budget process, including operating and capital decisions.

Analyzes complex financial data to drive operational improvement and/or provides subject-matter expertise in key financial areas. Accountable for accurate volume and expense planning in assigned areas to support regional leaders in achieving goals. Requires the ability to promote teamwork and develop team members without direct reports, leading through influence. Possesses advanced knowledge of principles and practices within a specialized financial field and participates in research to advance the field or practice area. Leads planning and development of programs/projects within the specialization and provides guidance, direction, or training to staff. May lead non-reporting staff and share specialized expertise with others. Has matrixed management responsibilities with financial analysts.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze financial, operational, clinical, and economic data to support strategic and operational decisions.
  • Serve as a trusted financial resource for operational leaders, providing financial reporting, expense management, and evaluation of growth opportunities.

  • Ensure accurate volume and expense planning to support regional leaders in achieving goals.
  • Lead planning and development of programs/projects within the financial specialization.
  • Provide guidance, direction, or training to staff and lead non-reporting team members.
  • Partner with Assistant CFOs, CFOs, and regional leadership to drive long-range financial planning and annual budget processes.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (required).
  • Master’s degree (e.g., MBA, MHA, or MS Finance) preferred.
  • CPA, CFA, or equivalent certification preferred.
  • 6–8 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare reimbursement, regulatory frameworks, and financial operations.
  • Knowledge of state and national regulatory agency guidelines and/or GAAP or other industry-standard financial guidelines.
  • Experience successfully interacting with all levels of leadership.
  • Experience implementing large-scale process improvement initiatives that drive measurable business results.
