About the role

Williamsburg Adventures (WAD) Substitutes are outdoor and leadership enthusiasts who support an Adventures Lead and/or Guide when needed in one of our Adventures courses. Students in this course will earn PE credit for participating in activities like rock climbing, hiking, skiing, survival skills, first-aid, outdoor games, and more. Students will earn elective leadership credit for activities such as attending museums, visiting colleges, going on field trips, service projects, and applying leadership skills in simulations and various activities.

Essential Duties

  • Aid in facilitating transformational learning experiences by being trained on the Williamsburg Adventures formula to infuse each experience with meaning. Be comfortable participating in 1:1 and group discussions and processing before, during, and after an activity.
  • Inspire, challenge, and engage students by entering an adventure when needed to assist the Adventure Lead or Adventure Guide. Most adventures occur between school hours (9 am - 3 pm) and typically run for two to five hours at various locations. Assist in guiding students, leading discussions, taking attendance, and administering first aid if needed.
  • Follow the direction of Adventure Leads to ensure student safety. Support Adventures Leads in overseeing the safety of students between drop-off and pick-up. Report to the Adventures Lead and Guide in each geographical area.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least 18 years old and one full year post-high school
  • Outdoor and/or leadership experience preferred
  • Current First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start)
  • Valid and current driver’s license
  • Strong organizational, planning, and communication skills
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Ability to provide transformational mentoring to youth
  • Willingness to lead with authenticity, vulnerability, and integrity
  • Energy and enthusiasm for outdoor experiences and personal growth
  • Comfort using technology platforms including SIS, Canvas, Zoom, Remind, and Google Suite (training provided)
  • Ability to be available on short notice (on the predetermined dates)

Position Structure & Time Commitment

  • 10 predetermined Adventure Fridays per semester
  • Most adventures are 2–5 hours in length and occur primarily on Fridays
  • Additional seasonal duties may offer opportunities for increased hours
  • Mileage reimbursement provided for travel to and from adventure locations from your home address

Physical And Mental Requirements

  • Ability to perform physical activities, including walking, hiking, running, standing for extended periods, lifting, and bending
  • Ability to maintain continuous visual supervision of students
  • Ability to hear and respond to students in active indoor and outdoor environment
