About the role
The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant role at UT MD Anderson supports the Neuro-Oncology Service and Cancer Neurology Service by delivering advanced clinical care to patients with complex oncologic and neurologic conditions. This role focuses on comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes across inpatient and outpatient settings within a highly specialized clinical environment. The role works in close collaboration with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessments through interviews, health histories, physical examinations, and diagnostic studies
- Identify normal and abnormal health characteristics and document findings in progress notes, care plans, and discharge summaries
- Dictate and maintain accurate clinical documentation in accordance with institutional standards
- Collaborate with physicians to formulate and implement treatment plans for identified health problems
- Initiate appropriate care and therapeutic interventions consistent with continuing healthcare needs
- Continuously evaluate patient responses and outcomes to adjust plans of care as needed
- Write prescriptions for medications and blood products based on laboratory results and established protocols
- Order routine diagnostic and follow-up studies and therapeutic measures within limited prescriptive authority
- Coordinate post-discharge care in alignment with written practice protocols and institutional guidelines
- Perform diagnostic procedures including lumbar puncture, lumbar puncture with chemotherapy instillation, ommaya tap, ommaya tap with chemotherapy instillation, and ommaya tap for indium DTPA instillation
- Obtain specimens such as cerebrospinal fluid as clinically indicated
- Conduct or participate in inpatient rounds for the Neuro-Oncology Service or Cancer Neurology Service when assigned
- Ensure delivery of appropriate, high-quality inpatient care through interdisciplinary collaboration
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of clinical operations and patient care
Qualifications
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse: Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003.
- Physician Assistant: Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA).
