About the Division

Since 1989, TTUHSC Managed Care has served as a healthcare delivery service, providing high-quality, low-cost healthcare to patients within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice system. We offer medical, mental health, and dental services to patients in 22 facilities throughout West Texas.

Visa Information

TTUHSC may initiate new H-1B I-129 visa petitions at its sole discretion, subject to approval from the Texas Workforce Commission. On a limited, case-by-case basis, the institution may sponsor eligible individuals for change-of-status or change-of-employer petitions for qualifying positions. TTUHSC will not pay the $100,000 fee, if applicable.

Responsibilities

• Clinical Assessment & Management
  • Conducts thorough clinical interviews and assessments with inmates, ensuring documentation is completed daily.
  • Provides outpatient mental health care for inmates with severe mental illness or those considered high-risk.
  • Writes clinical assessments based on sound, balanced judgment.
  • Manages referrals to medical and mental health providers as needed.
  • Facilitates and documents releases from Crisis Development Observation (CDO), Mental Health Observation (MHO), and Behavioral Health Follow-up (BHF) referrals.
• Risk & Safety Management
  • Identifies and manages risks related to inmate mental health during all interactions.
  • Reports threats or concerns (e.g., Offender Protection Investigations or safety threats) to security staff per Safe Prisons Plan.
  • Prioritizes tasks with a focus on risk management.
• Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintains accurate inmate/patient reminders and records.
  • Completes all required documentation by close of business each day.
  • Adheres to all TDCJ Health Services, ACA, TTUHSC, and Outpatient Behavioral Health guidelines.
• Productivity & Professional Standards
  • Meets or exceeds monthly productivity goals set by the Behavioral Health Management Team.
  • Responds professionally to supervision, accepting and applying feedback constructively.
  • Keeps supervisors informed of relevant clinical and administrative issues.
• Professional Development
  • Attends trainings and reads relevant materials to enhance clinical skills.
  • Uses professional development funds for licensure renewal and continuing education.

  • Assesses patients to determine general mental health and prescribes treatment with treatment teams’ input, administering medication or other treatment as needed.
  • Assesses patients for common forensic issues such as civil commitment, decisional capacity, and compelled medication, and participates in their respective legal processes.
  • Takes regional call to ensure continuous psychiatric coverage within the TTUHSC regions.
  • Refers patients to medical specialists or practitioners for specialized treatment.

Requirements

• Graduation from a Physician Assistant's training program approved by the Council on Allied Health Education Accreditation of the American Medical Association.
• Current Physician Assistant license in the State of Texas or ability to transfer license to Texas.
• Certification as a Physician Assistant as evidenced by passing the examinations given by the National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants.
• OR
• Graduation from an accredited school of nursing as a nurse practitioner from an approved certification program recognized by Texas Board of Nursing.
• Current R.N. license as approved by the Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer license to Texas.
• Certification as a Nurse Practitionist from an approved certification program as recognized by Texas Board of Nursing or ability to transfer certification to Texas.

Preferred Qualifications

• PMHNP Certification for Nurse Practitioners.
• Psych experience preferred for PA candidates.

Pay

Monthly pay grade range: $136,791 – $153,924.

Schedule

• Full-time onsite position.
• Remote/hybrid schedules will not be considered at this time.
• Shift: Day.
