Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) - Neurosurgery Spine Inpatient and Outpatient III (Hillcrest)

Cleveland Clinic’s Neurological Institute has an exciting career opportunity in our nationally recognized spine program for a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant with OR experience. Specialists from orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and medical spine collaborate to provide patients with the latest and most innovative care options. This position is based at Hillcrest Hospital, with services extending across the region.

About the Role

• First assist in spine surgery
• Inpatient rounding (weekday and weekend)
• On-call rotation
• Outpatient clinic

Responsibilities

• Conduct thorough medical histories and perform complete physical examinations (where indicated).
• Initiate appropriate lab, radiology, or other special tests for illness evaluation and scrutinize lab data to establish patient health status and develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan.
• Work collaboratively with the healthcare team.
• Perform and interpret common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic, and other routine diagnostic procedures as credentialed and privileged.
• Perform routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged.
• Prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by license and Cleveland Clinic policies.
• Educate patients on their disease, treatments, and related drug/treatment side effects and hazards.
• Participate in medical team rounds and collaborate with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members to ensure quality patient care.
• Refer patients to specialists for consultation or specialized health resources and treatment.
• Ensure continuity of care by serving as a liaison between the patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or specialty areas.
• Participate in quality monitoring through periodic review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes.
• Facilitate appropriate length of stay, discharge planning, and compliance with regulatory standards for inpatient management.
• Support professional development of the healthcare team and promote translation of evidence-based practices, guidelines, and research.
• May conduct research studies, assist in data collection and analysis, serve as a clinical preceptor for students, or onboard new caregivers.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Surgical experience is required; new graduates who have completed a surgical rotation are welcome to apply.
• Must be an energetic individual with excellent clinical care skills and a working knowledge of spinal disorders.
• Nationally certified Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant).

Qualifications

Education

• Nurse Practitioner (APRN):
  • MSN required upon hire or within 3 years of hire for external hires and internal hires moving from a non-APRN licensed role to an APRN licensed role (effective 05/01/2014).
  • Graduate of an accredited APRN program.
  • If in neonatal care service area, Master’s Degree is required upon hire.
• Physician Assistant (PA):
  • Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program.
  • Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies and/or higher degree obtained from a program recognized by their practicing state’s Licensing Board.

Certifications & Licensure

• Nurse Practitioner:
  • Currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in applicable state(s). Must also be licensed as an RN in applicable state(s).
  • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a nationally accredited organization recognized by the state Board of Nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) through the AHA, or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) may be required based on work setting.
  • Must have arrangements with at least one physician in accordance with state Board of Nursing requirements.
  • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals.
• Physician Assistant:
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA or successor organization recognized by their practicing state’s Licensing Board.
  • License to practice and prescribe issued by their practicing state’s Licensing Board.
  • Current DEA License or DEA designee as required by NCQA.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP), or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) may be required based on work setting.
  • Must have a Physician Supervision Agreement and signed addendum to the agreement.
  • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals.

Work Experience

Related clinical experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.
• Manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination for performing physical examinations.
• Corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.
• Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
• May require exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.

Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay

Annual salary range for new hires: $101,900.00 – $173,220.00. Actual compensation may vary based on factors such as job responsibilities, relevant experience, skills, scheduling requirements, education, and area of licensure. The range is based on full-time employment (1.0 FTE).

Schedule

4 ten-hour shifts per week.
