About the Role

A nationally certified Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) will provide primary and/or specialty care in inpatient neurological settings, focusing on the Stroke and ASERT (Acute Stroke Emergency Response Team) services. This role emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention, and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic neurological and medical conditions. You will function as an independent clinician, collaborating closely with staff physicians, fellows, residents, and other advanced practice providers.

Schedule

Four 10-hour shifts per week (6:00 AM – 4:00 PM), rotating with 8 APPs for weekend and holiday coverage.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients with new stroke symptoms to diagnose, initiate, and execute treatment plans.
  • Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making while collaborating with staff physicians and healthcare team members.
  • Counsel and educate patients with strokes and their families.
  • Conduct thorough medical histories, perform complete physical examinations, and initiate appropriate lab, radiology, or other diagnostic tests.
  • Scrutinize lab data to establish patient health status and develop working diagnoses and treatment plans.
  • Perform and interpret common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic, and other routine diagnostic procedures as credentialed.
  • Perform routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee.
  • Prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by licensure and Cleveland Clinic policies.
  • Educate patients on disease processes, treatments, drug side effects, and hazards.
  • Participate in medical team rounds and collaborate with nursing, medical, and other healthcare team members.
  • Refer patients to specialists for consultation or specialized treatment as needed.
  • Ensure continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patients and the multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Participate in quality monitoring through periodic review of records and treatment plans.
  • Facilitate appropriate length of stay, discharge planning, and compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Support professional development of the healthcare team and promote evidence-based practices, guidelines, and research.
  • May conduct research studies, assist in data collection and analysis, or serve as a clinical preceptor for students.
  • Onboard new caregivers and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

  • APRN: MSN required upon hire or within 3 years of hire for external hires and internal hires moving from a non-APRN role. Graduate of an accredited APRN program. If in neonatal care, a Master’s Degree is required upon hire.
  • PA: Graduate of an A.R.C.-approved Physician Assistant Program. Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies or higher from a program recognized by the practicing state’s Licensing Board.

Certifications & Licensure

  • NP:
    • Currently licensed as a Nurse Practitioner in applicable state(s).
    • Licensed as an RN in applicable state(s).
    • National certification as a Nurse Practitioner by a nationally accredited organization recognized by the state Board of Nursing.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
    • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) may be required based on work setting.
    • Must have arrangements with at least one physician per state Board of Nursing requirements.
    • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of applicable hospitals.
  • CNS:
    • Currently licensed as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in applicable state(s).
    • Licensed as an RN in applicable state(s).
    • National certification as a Clinical Nurse Specialist by a nationally accredited organization recognized by the state Board of Nursing.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
    • ACLS, PALS, or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) may be required based on work setting.
    • Must have arrangements with at least one physician per state Board of Nursing requirements.
    • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of applicable hospitals.
  • PA:
    • Certification as a Physician Assistant through the NCCPA or successor organization.
    • License to practice and prescribe issued by the practicing state’s Licensing Board.
    • Current DEA License or DEA designee as required by NCQA.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
    • ACLS, PALS, NRP, or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) may be required based on work setting.
    • Physician Supervision Agreement and signed addendum required.
    • Must be credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of applicable hospitals.

Work Experience

Related clinical experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to walk and stand for long periods.
  • Manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination for physical examinations.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to a normal range.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May require exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay

Annual salary range for new hires: $101,900 – $173,220. Actual compensation may vary based on job responsibilities, relevant experience, skills, scheduling requirements, education, and area of licensure. The range is based on full-time employment (1.0 FTE).
