Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA/APP) TCV ICU

About the role

UVA Health is seeking an experienced and dedicated Advanced Practice Provider, Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Associate (PA) to join its Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit (TCV ICU). As a member of a dynamic, collaborative, multidisciplinary team, you will deliver exceptional critical care to postoperative cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery patients.

Responsibilities

• Participate in the full spectrum of postoperative critical care management for cardiac, thoracic, and vascular patient populations, including accepting new OR admissions, hospital transfers, and urgent acute transfers, as well as coordinating discharges and transfers
• Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients admitted to the TCV ICU who have undergone cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgeries, including heart and lung transplantation, as well as those requiring ECMO and other mechanical circulatory support devices
• Develop and implement evidence-based care plans tailored to each patient’s needs, ensuring optimal outcomes and patient safety
• Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, evaluate patient responses, and adjust the plan of care based on ongoing objective and subjective data collection
• Perform a wide range of interventions and procedures within the scope of advanced practice, including invasive monitoring, ventilator management, and hemodynamic support
• After a 3–4 month onboarding process, manage the care of 5–7 patients across cardiac, vascular, and thoracic surgery populations in a practice model emphasizing independence with physician support and collaboration
• Collaborate closely with surgeons, critical care intensivists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and pharmacists to coordinate care and facilitate communication
• Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of patient assessments, interventions, and outcomes in accordance with institutional protocols and regulatory standards
• Engage in self-motivated learning, process improvement, and quality improvement initiatives
• Perform common ICU bedside interventions, including bronchoscopy, central line, arterial, and chest tube placements
• Provide emergency department consultations to determine admission needs
• Conduct and document comprehensive history and physical examinations
• Analyze clinical data to formulate accurate differential diagnoses
• Prescribe and manage pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapies, adjusting plans based on patient response and evolving data
• Perform advanced clinical assessments, interventions, and procedures relevant to the ICU setting
• Identify and coordinate appropriate subspecialty consultations
• Communicate plans of care effectively while navigating complex psychosocial dynamics
• Lead and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams of physicians, APPs, nurses, therapists, and leadership
• Guide and support other members of the care team in dynamic, high-acuity environments
• Participate in initiatives that promote the development of APPs, RNs, and other colleagues
• Engage in quality improvement, patient safety, and process improvement initiatives
• Evaluate and augment quality initiatives to improve clinical outcomes and safety
• Contribute to research, evidence-based practice, and the application of scientific knowledge within the clinical setting

Preferred Experience

• 2+ years as an Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA) preferred, but new graduates welcome to apply
• Cardiothoracic surgery experience preferred but not required; applicants interested in postoperative cardiothoracic critical care are encouraged to apply
• Demonstrated high level of clinical autonomy, excellent critical thinking, and ability to practice independently in a fast-paced environment
• ACLS certification required (may be obtained upon hire)
• Collaborative, adaptable, and skilled in communicating within a multidisciplinary team setting

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master’s degree
• License or license eligible as an Advanced Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, or Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia
• If Nurse Practitioner, license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required
• Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required
• Current PALS/NRP as required, specific to position
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position

Pay

The pay range for this role is $129,323.00 – $185,265.60 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate’s qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
