About the Role

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Manager – Primary Care Service Line is a licensed Physician Assistant (PA) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) responsible for leadership, operational oversight, and management of APPs across Rush University Medical Center’s Primary Care service line. This role provides system-wide leadership for APP practice while maintaining a clinical presence to remain connected to frontline operations and patient care.

The Primary Care Service Line includes APPs practicing across multiple geographic regions, specialties, and care settings, supporting family medicine, internal medicine, and other primary care practices. The APP Manager partners closely with physician, nursing, and operational leadership to advance strategic priorities, optimize APP practice models, and ensure high-quality, patient-centered primary care.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct oversight, coordination, and management of APPs across the primary care service line.
• Partner with primary care physician, nursing, and operational leadership to establish and execute strategic clinical and operational priorities.
• Collaborate with leadership teams to ensure seamless integration of APP practice across all primary care settings.
• Support expansion and optimization of APP practice models to improve patient access, throughput, continuity of care, and operational efficiency.

Administrative & Operational Oversight

• Serve as direct manager for APPs and Lead APPs within the primary care service line.
• Oversee APP recruitment, onboarding, credentialing, privileging, orientation, and retention initiatives.
• Manage APP performance evaluations (annual and ongoing OPPE/FPPE), competencies, and professional development planning.
• Develop, maintain, and enforce APP policies, procedures, workflows, and best practices specific to primary care delivery.
• Resolve escalated staffing, performance, and employee relations concerns.
• Participate in budget development, resource allocation, productivity management, and fiscal oversight for APP operations.
• Attend and contribute to primary care leadership, faculty, and operational meetings.
• Ensure regular communication forums for APPs across the service line.
• Develop and monitor service line goals, productivity standards, patient access metrics, and quality outcomes.

Clinical Practice

• Maintain active clinical practice within the primary care service line to support clinical competency and model evidence-based primary care.
• Complete and document accurate histories and physical examinations.
• Conduct comprehensive and episodic assessments and develop patient care plans.
• Order, interpret, and manage diagnostic testing, therapies, and treatment plans within scope of practice.
• Prescribe medications, including controlled substances, as delegated and appropriate within scope of practice.
• Provide accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate care transitions and specialty referrals.

Leadership & Strategy

• Serve as a liaison between APPs, physicians, nursing, care management, and administrative leadership.
• Develop and sustain an environment that promotes excellence in APP practice, care delivery, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
• Facilitate APP engagement, mentorship, satisfaction, and retention initiatives.
• Participate in strategic planning efforts to align APP workforce contributions with service line and organizational goals.
• Evaluate and evolve APP staffing and care delivery models to optimize patient outcomes, provider efficiency, and operational performance.
• Support leadership development and succession planning among APP team members.
• Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of APP workforce models and implement operational improvements as needed.

Education

• Develop, oversee, and promote continued learning and professional growth among APP staff.
• Coordinate APP student rotations, fellowship/residency opportunities, and academic partnerships.
• Encourage continuing education, specialty certification maintenance, and lifelong learning among APPs.
• Promote participation in research, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice initiatives.
• Pursue ongoing professional development to remain current on trends, innovations, and best practices in primary care medicine and APP leadership.

Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of Advanced Practice Provider experience in a primary care-related specialty.
• Leadership/management experience preferred; experience in an academic medical center is a plus.
• Demonstrated expertise in primary care, APP practice management, and interdisciplinary collaboration strongly preferred.
• This role reports directly to the Director of Advanced Practice Providers and has an indirect reporting relationship to the Primary Care Service Line leadership team.

Position Requirements

Nurse Practitioner

• Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Registered Professional Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse (or eligible to obtain licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation).
• Master of Science in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice with clinical specialty appropriate to the position.
• Current certification by American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
• BLS certification.

Physician Assistant

• Current licensure from the State of Illinois as a Physician Assistant/Associate (or eligible to obtain licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation).
• Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant/Associate Program.
• Current certification from National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
• BLS certification.

Pay

Total pay range: $190,000 – $245,000 for a full-time, 1.0 FTE employee. The range reflects factors including specialty, relevant experience, training, and organizational needs. Additional compensation may include premium pay rates, sign-on bonuses, and relocation allowances.
