Advanced Practice Provider-Inpatient Hep/Outpatient GI-Full Time

This position is not remote and involves experience with Inpatient Hepatology and outpatient GI and Hepatology.

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients in both acute care and outpatient settings. The APP examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals, ensuring proper illness and injury care, disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

Responsibilities

• Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.
• Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.
• Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
• Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.
• Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.
• Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.
• Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.
• Facilitates staff, patient, and family decision-making by providing educational tools.
• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
• Assesses physical and psychosocial status of patients in inpatient and/or outpatient settings.
• Sees GI and/or Hepatology patients in an outpatient clinic setting via interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.
• For inpatient rotations, rounds on the UMH Hepatology inpatient service no later than 8 am, with proper sign-out of patients with fellows at the end of the day and prior to weekends.
• Recognizes deviations from normal in the physical assessment and collaborates with a physician in formulating treatment plans for health problems and follow-up.
• Writes prescriptions for medication, blood products based upon laboratory results, routine diagnostic and follow-up studies, therapeutic measures, and post-discharge care in accordance with written practice protocols.
• Independently follows patients in an outpatient setting and manages concurrent patient care.
• Initiates and facilitates clinical research protocols and coordinates patient care with research staff.
• Obtains complete medical history independent of supervision by the physician.
• Sees patients in follow-up between infusions and post-procedure as necessary.
• Initiates and maintains infusion orders for non-chemo infusions as per protocol, as needed.
• Orders appropriate procedures and laboratory tests according to practice guidelines.
• Develops, implements, and evaluates a plan of care appropriate for the patient and family.
• Actively participates in quality assurance programs and peer review activities.
• Provides assistance to physicians in the care and treatment of patients.
• Provides medical support to staff, triaging and implementing care in a knowledgeable and skillful manner.
• Administers nursing assessments, including performing examinations, giving injections, and assessing a patient's health status.
• Assesses severity of patient's condition, determining and directing patients to appropriate medical providers.
• Provides peer-to-peer reviews with insurance carriers in support of patients' medications.
• Consents patients for GI procedures and places orders for procedures and preps.
• Maintains EMR inbox and closes encounters in a timely fashion according to UMMG guidelines.
• Responds to patient inquiries and requests, and communicates results to patients in coordination with back office nurses, medical assistants, and secretaries.
• Provides inbasket message coverage for providers who depart the practice or are out on FMLA.
• Closes inbasket messages within 7 days and encounters within 3 days of visit.

Requirements

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Valid State of Florida Acute Care APRN License or Physician Assistant License.
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in Gastroenterology or Hepatology practice.
• Previous training or experience in an Acute care setting with GI and/or Hepatology practice as APRN or PA.
• Acute Care Certification for inpatient.
• Annual flu vaccine, unless able to provide medical or religious documentation.

Schedule

• For outpatient ambulatory work: 7-8 half days in outpatient ambulatory clinics at various UHealth locations (UHealth Towers, UMHC Crohns and Colitis Center, Kendall, Lennar, Doral, Sole Mia, Boca, Plantation, Deerfield sites).
• For inpatient rotations: Rounds on the Hepatology Inpatient Service at University of Miami Hospital (M-F).
