Advanced Practice Provider - Hospital Medicine

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Provider delivers high-quality medical and/or surgical patient care, addressing acute and chronic complaints in collaboration with an Attending Physician. This role provides diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive healthcare services as part of a collaborative APP/Physician team, performing histories and physicals, ordering and interpreting tests, diagnosing and treating injuries/illnesses, assisting with surgical procedures, counseling patients, and prescribing medications or performing invasive procedures as defined by the Virginia Board of Medicine.

The Advanced Practice Provider works collaboratively with the medical team to ensure organized, timely, cost-effective, and quality patient care under a departmental and state-approved scope of practice.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate mastery of treatment and patient care for the specialty population served, coordinating care across the continuum of services.
• Assess health status through histories, physical examinations, diagnostic tests, and direct patient care; initiate screening and therapeutic interventions.
• Perform or assist with surgical procedures, prescribe medications, and initiate emergency procedures as needed.
• Practice safety, environmental, and infection control methods.
• Make rounds with attending physicians as necessary and supervise/coordinate patient care and support staff.
• Document all pertinent information in the patient’s medical record and interpret findings to develop treatment plans.
• Formulate and prioritize short-term and long-term therapeutic plans, incorporating physical, spiritual, cultural, and psychosocial aspects of care.
• Develop strategies to decrease length of stay and resource consumption within the specialty area.
• Maintain effective communication with the healthcare team to coordinate care and assist in transitions between primary and specialty services.
• Function as a consultant to healthcare professionals on routine and complex therapeutic interventions.
• Collaborate in developing, implementing, and monitoring multidisciplinary care plans for complex patients.
• Provide patient, family, and caregiver education and may train residents, fellows, and other healthcare staff.
• Participate in continual assessment and revision of practices and procedures in the specialty area.
• Utilize current research to develop, implement, and evaluate critical paths and standards of care for the identified patient population.
• Contribute to the profession through research, publications, consultation, and educational activities.
• Demonstrate knowledge and support for clinical trials within the specialty area.
• Incorporate clinical judgment in ethical decision-making and promote interdisciplinary collaboration to resolve ethical dilemmas.
• Examine patient values impacting treatment decisions and recognize patient rights as a foundation for ethical decisions.
• Seek professional growth opportunities through organizational affiliations and continuing education.
• Assess personal learning needs and develop a plan for professional development.
• Participate in teaching programs and maintain certification requirements for VCUHS privileges.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission of VCU Health and accept alternate assignments as required.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant Program.
• Current Virginia licensure from the appropriate Board as a Nurse Practitioner, Nurse Midwife, or Physician Assistant.
• Current national certification as appropriate for the role.
• Credentialing in accordance with medical staff by-laws for specific job titles.
• Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications; additional certifications (e.g., ACLS, PALS) may be required at the department level.
• Previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Cultural responsiveness.

Preferred Qualifications

• Service-specific education and certification.
• Three years of previous clinical experience with the population served.
• Previous experience in an academic healthcare system.

Hazards

• Depth perception.
• Use of latex gloves.
• Exposure to toxic/caustic chemicals, moving mechanical parts, dust/fumes, potential electrical shock, x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, and gaseous risks.
