Advanced Practice Professional - Urology

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the APP assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice and area of specialty in urology. The APP completes comprehensive patient health evaluations, coordinates educational and psychosocial needs, and participates in peri-operative care, discharge planning, and post-hospital follow-up.

Responsibilities

• Manages comprehensive and individualized care for surgical urology patients and their families in inpatient, post-discharge, and ambulatory settings.
• Completes daily rounds, consults, and pre-procedure/surgical evaluations.
• Performs integrated assessments and participates in peri-operative management, including first-assisting in the operative suite.
• Orders additional tests or consults in collaboration with surgical urology faculty or established clinical guidelines.
• Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests following established clinical guidelines.
• Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
• Documents succinct, comprehensive clinical evaluations in medical records.
• Facilitates patient discharge and follow-up by coordinating appropriate services and tests.
• Performs necessary urological procedures following established clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
• Develops individualized plans of care, including teaching, discharge planning, and referrals.
• Participates in physician rounds and consultations, identifying unstable or complex patient care situations.
• Assists in collecting outcome measures and evaluating the effectiveness of patient/family teaching.
• Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning in clinical decision-making.
• Utilizes equipment safely and bases decisions on scientific principles and established standards of care.
• Provides education to nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
• Serves as a resource and mentor for staff caring for surgical urology patients.
• Communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and ancillary services.
• Documents all interventions and plans of care in compliance with hospital policies.
• Collaborates with leaders and staff to achieve patient outcome-based improvements in care.
• Participates in inter-disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
• Serves as a professional role model and promotes innovation in care delivery.
• Participates in committees, task forces, and performance improvement plans.
• Reviews and interprets surgical urology data to recommend and implement changes.
• Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
• Assists in collecting outcome measures for faculty, administrators, and directors.
• Performs other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

For Nurse Practitioners

• Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• National Certification by a recognized APRN Certification Center.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
• APRNs must be privileged as First Assists and hold RNFA certification.
• BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
• Surgical and/or urology experience preferred; eligible new graduates will be considered.
• Acute Care or FNPs considered as preferred qualifications.

For Physician Assistants

• Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as a Physician Assistant from an ARC-PA-approved program.
• Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
• BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
• Master’s level degree as a Physician Assistant preferred.
• Surgical and/or urology experience preferred; eligible new graduates will be considered.

Skills and Abilities

• Proficiency with computers.
• Strong communication skills.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy/Hard Work: Requires strength and stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning patients, standing, walking, and carrying materials/equipment weighing 40+ pounds.

Working Environment

• Working closely with others.
• Protracted or irregular hours.
• Exposure to biohazards, infectious diseases, and the deceased.
• Working with hands in water.
• Electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.

Schedule

Scheduled weekly hours: 40 (Exempt).
