Advanced Practice Professional - Preoperative Evaluation Center

About the Role

The Advanced Practice Professional (APP) provides high-quality, patient-centered care as a member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Working collaboratively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the APP assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages patients within their scope of practice and area of specialty. The APP coordinates the involvement of medical/surgical specialty teams to develop a comprehensive optimization plan for preoperative patients, reviews the plan of care with the clinical team, performs diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, and coordinates surgical planning. The APP also participates in the education of residents and medical/nursing students.

Responsibilities

• Consultation service managing comprehensive and individualized care for preoperative patients and their families.
• Completes optimization evaluations with pre-procedure/pre-surgical evaluations and integrated assessments.
• Orders additional tests or consults as deemed appropriate, following established clinical guidelines and protocols.
• Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests within scope of practice.
• Consults and communicates with clinic, surgical, and hospital staff regarding abnormal findings.
• Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations and documents findings in the medical record.
• Facilitates patient optimization by coordinating appropriate services and tests prior to surgery.
• Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care for preoperative patients, including teaching, surgical, and medical planning.
• Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the age continuum.
• Identifies unstable or complex preoperative patient care situations and initiates appropriate intervention.
• Evaluates preoperative patients and serves as an optimization coordinator for follow-up procedures and tests.
• Assists in the collection of outcome measures.
• Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills in clinical decision-making.
• Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate strategies to educate nursing staff, hospital staff, students, patients, families, and the community.
• Documents the plan of care, interventions, and evaluations in the patient’s medical record.
• Collaborates with other leaders and staff to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Provides leadership in developing and implementing changes in preoperative practice.
• Participates in inter-disciplinary approaches to patient care, program development, and education.
• Serves as a professional role model and promotes innovation in care delivery.
• Participates in committees and task forces as assigned.
• Documents hours and submits billing reports, as appropriate.
• Reviews and interprets preoperative data and recommends/implements changes as necessary.
• Participates in clinical trials and research studies with the Principal Investigator.
• Assists preoperative faculty, administrators, and directors in the collection of outcome measures.
• Performs other duties/projects as assigned.

Requirements

For Nurse Practitioner

• Graduate of a CCNE-accredited nursing program with a Master’s Degree in Nursing.
• National Certification by one of the recognized APRN Certification Centers.
• Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a professional Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in West Virginia.
• American Heart Association BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.
• Preoperative and/or acute care experience preferred; eligible new graduates will be considered.

For Physician Assistant

• Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree as a Medical/Surgical Physician Assistant.
• Graduate of an ARC-PA-approved Physician Assistant (PA) training program.
• Certification by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants.
• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the WV Board of Medicine or WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine.
• American Heart Association BLS Certification required; additional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion of the department.

Preferred Qualifications

• For Nurse Practitioners: ACNPs, CNSs, and FNPs will be considered.
• For Physician Assistants: Master’s Degree preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Heavy/Hard Work: Requires strength and/or stamina, including lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, positioning of patients, standing, walking, and carrying materials/equipment weighing 40+ pounds.
