Surgical Advanced Practice Provider

About the Role

SUNY Upstate is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Surgical Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for our Community Campus. The APP will provide surgical assistance in the operative theater and floor care to vascular and general surgery inpatients, encompassing vascular services and procedures, as well as general services based on the needs of the vascular service. The role involves evaluating patients, formulating diagnoses, managing treatment plans, determining discharge appropriateness, and coordinating care with the interdisciplinary team.

Responsibilities

• First assist in general and vascular surgery.
• Conduct rounds and initiate and implement care for all surgical/vascular patients.
• Coordinate surgical/vascular floor care with non-operative APP and residents.
• Demonstrate technical proficiency in surgical procedures, including vascular, IR, robotic, laparoscopic, and laparotomy.
• Assist in pre-operative and post-operative management of patients.
• Perform general surgical/vascular consultations from other services.
• Evaluate and admit general surgical/vascular patients from the emergency department.
• Perform bedside procedures independently in accordance with credentialing.
• Function as a preceptor for APP students during their surgical rotation.
• Educate and mentor new APP team members.
• Assess and evaluate patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies, and arrange referrals, consultations, and therapeutic services.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with patients, families, referring physicians, and all members of the healthcare team.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA) or eligible.
• NYS Licensed/Registered NP or PA.
• Current national certification consistent with clinical practice.
• NPI number and Medicare enrollment with a Medicare Identification Number (PTAN) (or eligible for Medicare enrollment within 6 months of hire).
• CPR-BLS certification required at the time of appointment.
• NP must have RNFA certification.
• Must successfully pass pre-employment and credentialing clearances.

Preferred Qualifications

• One year or more of experience as a Surgical First Assist.
• Experience in vascular surgery.

Schedule

Rotational coverage for day, evening, and night shifts, including weekends and holidays. Shifts may range from 8 to 12 hours based on operational needs. The position is based in a Level I Trauma Center providing 24/7 care across a 17+ county region.
