Responsibilities
- Duties Will Include But Are Not Limited To
- Perform initial assessments of ventilator/moderate care patients and general care patients.
- Perform detailed history and physical, formulate initial assessment and plan, and present patient cases and any pertinent data to medical staff.
- Provide continuing care and discharge management of patients on the service.
- Appropriately order, collect, and interpret reports from diagnostic lab testing, radiographic procedures, and other clinical studies.
- Prescribe medications and enter other orders related to patient care.
- Perform various diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural clinical interventions, based on privileges such as management of chest tube removals, tracheostomy removal/change.
- Manage mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, heated hi-flow nasal canula for chronic and acute on chronic respiratory failure within unit guidelines.
- Manage antibiotics and antifungals.
- Manage hemodynamically stable gastrointestinal bleeding and liver failure patients.
- Manage renal failure patients requiring dialysis.
- Manage immunosuppression and opportunistic infections in transplant patients.
- Manage chest tubes, including decision to place, administering thrombolytics, placement on suction or water seal or clamp, decision to remove chest tube.
- Run ACLS codes for cardiac arrest.
- Initiate transplant evaluations for end stage lung and end stage liver patients.
- Assist attending physicians in orientation of new medical trainees to the service, such as resident physicians or medical students; assist in the training of new advanced practice providers to the service; assist in maintaining continuity of care throughout the hospital stay.
- Communicate appropriately with attending physicians, consultants, and other members of the patient care team in order to coordinate and provide clinical care.
- Maintain accurate and thorough documentation regarding patient status, evaluations, and treatments.
- Streamline the patient transfer process between levels of care, including writing discharge orders and summaries and communicating specific patient needs to internal and external care centers or team members, as well as ambulatory care providers as needed.
- Participate in quality assurance activities including quality improvement projects, peer evaluations and support research initiatives.
- Auxiliary functions as required to assure patient safety and satisfaction; and utilize new improvements and/or technologies that relate to job assignments.
Requirements
- NP: Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner specialty certification in the State of Michigan. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Certification as a Nurse Practitioner recognized by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN).
- P.A.: Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the State of Michigan. Satisfactory completion of a Physician Assistant program accredited by Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or one of its predecessor agencies, CAHEA or CAAHEP.
Qualifications
- 8 months Advance Practice Experience.
- Clinical experience with mechanical ventilation, non-invasive ventilation, heated hi-flow nasal canula for chronic and acute on chronic respiratory failure.
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate clinical care ideas across multiple patient care services and to communicate as a patient advocate.
- Ability to prioritize assignments and manage a busy work environment.
