About the role

The West Virginia University Health System, comprising 18 hospitals and five institutes, is the state's largest health system and private employer. The position is within the SMG Orthopaedics department.

Responsibilities

  • Manages comprehensive and individualized care for orthopaedic patients and their families in various settings.
  • Completes daily rounds and consults/pre-procedure evaluations.
  • Orders additional tests or consults as needed, collaborating with orthopedic faculty or following established guidelines.
  • Performs and communicates diagnostic test results, and consults with clinic and hospital staff.
  • Facilitates patient discharge by coordinating services and supporting equipment for outpatient follow-up appointments.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive individualized plan of care, including teaching and discharge planning.
  • Assists in the collection of outcome measures and promotes patient outcomes through collaborative efforts.
  • Participates in clinical trials and research studies, assisting faculty and administrators.
  • Documents patient visits, interventions, and evaluations in the medical record.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to improve patient care.
  • Serves as a resource for staff and provides educational programs.

Requirements

  • Nurse Practitioner: Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’s Degree in Nursing, National Certification as an APRN, and RN license.
  • Physician Assistant: Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree as Physician Assistant, graduate of an ARC-PA approved PA program, NP certification, and state license.

Qualifications

  • Nurse Practitioner: Acute care, surgical, or orthopedic experience preferred.
  • Physician Assistant: Acute care, surgical, or orthopedic experience preferred.

Skills

  • Expertise in orthopedic patient care across the age spectrum.
  • Ability to identify and manage unstable or complex patient care situations.
  • Effective communication and teaching skills.
  • Proficiency with computer systems.
