Overview
An Advanced Practice Clinician (APC) (Nurse Practitioner or Physician Associate) is needed to join the Gastroenterology team in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
Responsibilities
- Outpatient Responsibilities:
- Conduct comprehensive patient evaluations, including medical history, physical examinations, and diagnostic assessments.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic gastrointestinal conditions such as IBD, GERD, celiac disease, and functional bowel disorders.
- Order and interpret laboratory tests, imaging studies, and diagnostic procedures (e.g., stool tests, liver function tests, endoscopy results).
- Develop and implement treatment plans, including medication management, lifestyle modifications, and dietary recommendations.
- Educate patients and families on gastrointestinal health, disease management, and preventive care.
- Absorb and assist in outpatient procedures such as capsule endoscopy placement, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube changes, and hemorrhoid banding.
- Maintain and manage patients on biologic therapies or other advanced treatments for GI conditions.
- Inpatient Responsibilities:
- Provide consultations and follow-up care for hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal conditions, including GI bleeding, pancreatitis, and liver disease.
- Absorb and assist in emergent GI cases, coordinating care with the hospital team and specialists.
- Perform bedside procedures as appropriate under physician supervision.
- Collaborate with gastroenterologists, hospitalists, and nursing staff to ensure continuity of care.
- Participate in multidisciplinary rounds and contribute to patient care planning.
Qualifications
- Experience: Clinical experience in gastroenterology, internal medicine, or hospital medicine preferred. 1–3 years of experience in gastroenterology or a related field (preferred but not required).
- Skills: Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and decision-making skills; proficiency in ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests related to gastroenterology; excellent patient education and counseling abilities; strong communication and teamwork skills to collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary teams; ability to manage a high-volume patient load in both outpatient and inpatient settings; familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) and medical documentation; commitment to evidence-based practice and continuous professional development.
- Credentials: Essential: Valid and unrestricted license as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Associate (PA) in the practicing state. Board certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP), or Physician Associate (PA-C). Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). DEA registration for prescribing medications (if required).
- Education: Essential: Master’s degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assciate (PA) program.
