Job Overview

The Specialist Sarcoma Service at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the regional center for Bone and Soft Tissue Service, providing the highest level of expertise and specialist care for adults and children. This role has an Orthopaedics focus and will work as part of the MDT following patients from diagnosis through their initial and continuing care. You will have peer support from within the Orthopaedics Team, and have the opportunity to expand skills through collaborative working with paediatrics and plastics. The role includes a Friday; other days can be negotiated.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide a high standard of physiotherapy care to a highly complex patient group in specialty
  • Provide physiotherapy support for patients as in-patients, in outpatient clinics and on the day units as applicable to role
  • Provide an advisory service to patients, their families, physiotherapists, consultants, nursing staff and other health care professionals in tertiary and secondary care, both locally and regionally
  • Develop and provide specialist education and training to nursing, medical and physiotherapy staff and any other members of the MDT in order to optimise each patient's outcome and invest in the learning and development of people

Person specification

  • Qualifications & Education
    • Essential criteria: Degree or equivalent Diploma in Physiotherapy, State Registered with Health and Care Professions Council, Evidence of CPD and relevant post-graduate courses to MSc level, Knowledge of medical conditions relevant to the speciality and their impact on patient’s functional abilities, Highly specialist knowledge of the physiotherapy process and its application with the client group in the speciality
    • Desirable criteria: Knowledge of undertaking research projects, Knowledge of current NHS initiatives, Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Involvement with the relevant CSP Clinical Special Interest Group e.g. APCP, Previous Band 7 experience, Experience of carrying out audit projects
  • Skills & Abilities
    • Essential criteria: Good communication and interpersonal skills, Ability to pass on skills and knowledge to others both formally and informally, Good organisation, time management, problem-solving and prioritisation skills, Ability to work as part of a team, Ability to reflect and critically appraise own practice
    • Desirable criteria: IT Skills, Specialist treatment skills relevant to clinical group
