About the role

The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) (Community Care) position within the Hampton VA Healthcare System at the Hampton VAMC is seeking a candidate with specialized administrative patient support skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines to achieve team goals and ensure patient care is met.
  • Communicates tactfully and effectively, electronically, by phone, in person, and in writing, with internal and external customers, including preparing reports and presenting data to various organizational levels, and resolving patient concerns.
  • Utilizes advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, including scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals, to support patient care.
  • Keeps track of clinic utilization, manages patient systems to verify and validate accuracy, and resolves issues, monitors pre-appointment information and requirements to ensure readiness for patient visits, and enters appropriate information into the electronic record.
  • Coordinates with the patient care team to review clinic utilization, participates in team huddles and meetings to manage and plan patient care, and follows up on administrative tasks.
  • Scans documents, participates in team meetings, and provides input on problem-solving operational issues, educates providers about shared patients, and brings it to the attention of the provider.
  • Executes office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files, activating printers, inserting and deleting text, formatting and mailing patient letters, reports, and memoranda, and transmitting and receiving emails.
  • Provides telephone support to internal and external customers for scheduling actions, general questions, or contacting patients as requested by the care team.

Requirements

Applicants must demonstrate all of the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • Collaboration and communication with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines.
  • Effective communication, both electronically and in person, with internal and external customers, including preparing reports and presenting data to various organizational levels, and resolving patient concerns.
  • Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, including scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals.
  • Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow and patient support care administrative functions.
  • Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Six months experience of clerical - office - customer service - or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position, or one year of education above high school, or a combination of experience and education.
  • Certification: None required.
