Advanced Anesthesia Technician/Lead Anesthesia Trainer
About the Role
BSVESS is seeking an experienced Credentialed Veterinary Technician to serve as an anesthetist in our busy and growing surgery department, while also coordinating and overseeing anesthesia-related clinical training for our veterinary support staff. This role blends hands-on anesthesia expertise with education, mentorship, and program development. You'll create lesson plans, deliver lectures, coach technicians on the floor, assess learning progress, and help shape the future of anesthesia practice within our hospital.
Position Overview
The anesthesia technician is responsible for monitoring anesthetized patients across a wide range of specialty services—from stable patients undergoing elective diagnostic procedures to critically ill patients requiring lifesaving surgery. This role offers a high level of autonomy and the opportunity to continually develop advanced anesthesia and nursing skills. Anesthesia technicians work closely with surgeons, oncologists, and the Emergency & Critical Care (ECC) team to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
Responsibilities
- Set the standard for professionalism, patient care, and client service
- Coordinate, organize, and lead anesthesia-focused training programs
- Train and mentor veterinary staff in technical skills and industry best practices
- Assess staff skill levels and develop tailored training plans
- Evaluate anesthetic risk and anticipate patient needs
- Administer medications, fluids, CRIs, analgesics, and blood products as indicated
- Accurately calculate medication dosages and fluid boluses
- Perform IV catheter placement, anesthetic induction, and endotracheal intubation
- Utilize advanced monitoring equipment and respond appropriately to patient parameters
- Operate anesthetic ventilators, rebreathing, and non-rebreathing systems
- Provide thorough post-anesthetic patient care
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in a specialty and/or emergency veterinary setting
- Associate degree in Veterinary Technology or related field
- Active veterinary technician license required (VTS in Anesthesia or ECC strongly preferred)
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Strong veterinary knowledge and technical skill set
- Compassionate, patient-focused mindset
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Strong organizational, multitasking, and prioritization skills
- Ability to remain calm and effective in high-stress situations

BSVESS is located just 15 minutes from Providence, RI in Swansea, MA. We have moved into a completely renovated 36,000 sq ft facility with dedicated areas for emergency and specialty services. Current specialties include Internal Medicine, Emergency/Critical Care, Surgery, Medical and Radiation Oncology. Future specialties to include Cardiology, Radiology, Ophthalmology, and more. Specialized equipment includes telemetry, endoscopy, CT scanner, ultrasound, and linear accelerator.
