Advance Practice Provider, Ortho/Sports Medicine Practice - Ocoee

About the Role

Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute is one of the region’s largest orthopedic and sports medicine practices, providing comprehensive care for more than 250,000 patients each year. The institute features Florida’s first dedicated orthopedic hospital, a new medical pavilion with outpatient clinics, imaging, physical therapy, and the largest orthopedic ambulatory surgery center in Florida. Services cover the full spectrum of care—from prevention and diagnostics to therapeutic and surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and performance health. The institute also serves as the official medical provider for multiple professional, college, and high school athletic teams, as well as well-known sporting events and venues.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) practices medicine under the direction of physicians and/or surgeons, contributing to all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatment, and consultations with a high degree of independence.

Responsibilities

• Act as an advanced resource or lead worker in a clinic setting.
• Perform complex diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, prescribing necessary treatments and services for quality patient care.
• Operate with a high degree of independence in a specialized area, with minimal physician supervision.
• Assist in providing care for patients receiving radiation treatments, including writing perioperative orders, narcotics, stimulants, and depressant drugs.
• Perform detailed history and physical examinations; document inpatient H&P and discharge summaries (must be reviewed and countersigned by supervising medical staff within 24 hours).
• Initiate actions to facilitate therapeutic plans consistent with patient healthcare needs.
• Review medical records of patients under the supervision of the medical staff.
• Perform routine patient rounds to monitor and evaluate clinical status; report changes to supervising medical staff.
• Notify the attending physician about unusual or unexpected events requiring direct consultation.
• Dispense/prescribe medication as authorized by the supervising medical staff.
• Issue oral and written orders on behalf of the supervising medical staff.
• Write or dictate reports and progress notes in the medical record.
• Scrub with the supervising surgeon in the operating room.
• Remove catheters, drains, sutures, and staples; surgically close wounds, perform incision and drainage, debridement, and dressing (surgeon must remain in the immediate area).
• Assist physicians with special diagnostic procedures, following medical staff policies on supervision.
• Perform advanced cardiac life support; act on behalf of the supervising medical staff in medical emergencies until a licensed physician arrives.
• Provide patient education.
• Maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with Orlando Health policies and federal, state, and local standards.
• Comply with all Orlando Health policies and procedures.
• Act as a role model and resource for staff.
• Participate in the review and revision of policies and procedures.
• Demonstrate compliance with standards of regulatory and accrediting agencies.
• Establish relationships with healthcare professionals in the community.
• Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication with diverse populations, including physicians, employees, patients, and families.
• Participate in basic science and clinical research projects.

Qualifications

Education/Training

• Nurse Practitioner: MN, MSN, DNP, or PhD/DNS degree in nursing.
• Physician Assistant: Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program.

Licensure/Certification

• Nurse Practitioner:
  • APRN license in the state of Florida.
  • After July 1, 2006, national advanced certification from an approved nursing specialty board is required.
  • Current BLS certification.
• Physician Assistant:
  • Current physician assistant licensure in the state of Florida.
  • Current BLS/healthcare certification.

Experience

• Three years of Advanced Practice Provider experience.
