About the role

The Wyoming Department of Corrections seeks a Probation and Parole Officer in the Gillette Field Service Office. The Field Services Division oversees community supervision and case management for probationers and parolees.

Responsibilities

• Utilization and analysis of validated risk and needs assessments to determine appropriate supervision levels and develop individual case planning goals.
• Collaboration with government and private entities to enhance case management and support, promoting long-term change in client behavior.
• Identifying external and internal motivators of change through motivational interviewing and additional interviewing techniques to assist in case plan development.
• Understanding intervention, incentives, and sanctions within the criminal justice system, and utilizing these appropriately to achieve desired behaviors.
• Facilitating cognitive intervention groups and alternative evidence-based cognitive interventions to provide knowledge and enhance client motivation.
• Maintaining supervision standards to ensure public safety and help offenders re-socialize and reintegrate into the community as law-abiding citizens.
• Maintaining documentation of all case management collaborative efforts in a case management system.
• Conducting visits with clients in various settings to verify compliance and support positive behavior.
• Maintaining supervision of a caseload of adult probationers and parolees, including misdemeanor and felony cases, such as alcohol or drug offenses, sex offenses, domestic violence, theft, burglary, and clients determined not guilty by reason of mental illness.
• Creating a positive and collaborative environment for clients to gain the confidence to change their behavior in the long term.
• Maintaining supervision standards to include documentation, collateral contacts to promote public safety, and client accountability.
• Collaborating with the Prison Division to investigate and offer guidance for a positive and effective reentry plan for inmates soon to be released into the community.
• Writing reports to the Parole Board, Courts, or other stakeholders, requiring investigation, insight, and analysis with the assistance of various agencies, individuals, and assessments to determine risk level and appropriateness of supervision, along with various other recommendations.
• Interviewing, evaluating, and conducting investigations into the offender's background and criminal history to determine their risks and needs.
• Interviewing the victim for the purposes of presentence investigation reports, determining restitution, and recommendations to the Court. Additionally, contacting victims for educational and safety purposes throughout the client's supervision.

Qualifications

• Prior experience in Adult Probation and Parole, typically gained through an Interstate Compact Specialist level.
• Education: Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, in Social Work, Counseling, Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or Administration of Justice.
• Experience: 3-5 years of progressive work experience in Adult Probation and Parole.
• Preferences: Bachelor's Degree, progressive work experience, and acquired knowledge at the level of an Interstate Compact Specialist.
