Adult Learning Instructor - Corrections Education

About the role

The Adult Learning Instructor provides instruction to adults (17 and older) who are learning English or preparing for the GED, supporting their educational, professional, and personal goals while modeling the library’s values of integrity, passion, respect, and kindness. This position is contingent upon continued grant funding and the ongoing needs of community partners.

Responsibilities

  • Works a minimum of 30 hours per week and no more than 39 hours per week.
  • Absolutely essential to arrive at locations throughout Mesa County to successfully fulfill job expectations.
  • Plans and delivers engaging, learner-centered instruction in GED Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science, as based on the instructional needs of the adult learning population.
  • Develops lesson plans that integrate instruction aligned to College & Career Readiness Standards and English Language Proficiency Standards, foundational literacy skills, employability skills (including soft skills), ongoing assessment to monitor student progress, and activities that build learner self-directedness, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Embeds differentiated instruction techniques into classroom design in materials and activities, and intentionally and actively works toward creating a kind, welcoming, and inclusive classroom environment that is trauma-informed and honors diversity.
  • Develops responsive, individualized learning plans that support and empower students to make skill-level gains and/or successfully prepare for GED subject tests.
  • Provides ongoing academic coaching, encouragement, and referrals to internal and external support services (e.g. Community Corrections case managers, workforce partners, community agencies), completing documentation of referrals as they relate to employment and educational outcomes.
  • Collaborates with Community Corrections case managers to address barriers to participation and promote student persistence, educational attainment, and successful reentry.
  • Collaborates with Adult Learning colleagues to develop meaningful learning experiences and celebratory events for learners, including the annual Tutor & Student Celebration and GED graduation ceremony.
  • Remains up to date on Community Corrections activities and opportunities to further learning related to teaching Community Corrections clients.
  • Participates in required professional development and continuous improvement activities related to adult learning theory, motivation and persistence strategies, changing program practices to meet adult education outcomes, and other opportunities as identified in team meetings and regular one-on-one meetings with the program supervisor.
  • Contributes to a team atmosphere that embodies respect, kindness, and integrity.
  • Proctors National Reporting System (NRS) and GED practice assessments as needed.
  • Maintains accurate records of student attendance, performance, and outcomes.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation in the LACES management information system to fulfill library, state, and federal reporting requirements.

Requirements

  • Education and training associated with completion of a four-year degree in a field of study related to the area of assignment, and two (2) years previous related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • ESL, EFL, TEFL, ABE, or TOEFL Certification preferred.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in written communication.
  • Knowledge of database management and other software programs, such as MS Office and Google Drive.
  • Skills necessary to organize, plan, schedule and implement successful instruction.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license, preferred.
  • Experience developing learning curriculums preferred.
  • Ability to communicate verbally with public and co-workers in person and on the telephone.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds.

Benefits

This 3/4-time position includes a full benefits package including health, dental, vision, life, AD&D, and supplemental insurance coverages as well as HRA and retirement savings. Benefits include vacation and sick leave, and 13 paid holidays.

Schedule

Unpaid meal break of at least 1/2 hour per shift to be taken for each 5 hours scheduled. Must be able to work a flexible schedule. The person in this position must be able to work Monday through Thursday afternoons and evenings.

Pay

$21.15- $22.10 per hour, depending on experience.
