ADS Academic Advisor

Job Summary

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) seeks an academic advisor to support the department of Animal and Dairy Sciences (ADS). This critical position advises a portion of students in the undergraduate majors of Animal and Veterinary Biosciences and Dairy and Food Animal Management and supports the advising mission broadly across CALS disciplines.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements;
  • Affords proactive engagement with students as needed;
  • Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures;
  • Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum;
  • Implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers;
  • Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies;
  • Supports other departmental and college programming and advising which could include a focus on recruitment of prospective students, continuing student career exploration, and supporting the advising mission broadly across CALS;
  • Participates as a regularly scheduled generalist advisor for CALS SOAR (orientation) in both summer and winters sessions;
  • Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college.

  • Ability to work in a diverse environment and serve students and families and community partners from a wide variety of backgrounds;
  • Works collaboratively and cultivates relationships with internal and external partners (e.g., internal colleagues at the College, faculty and staff, related and relevant positions around the university, etc.);
  • Organizational and time-management skills that include: problem-solving, multi-tasking, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines;
  • Experience using computer software/programs (e.g., Zoom, Teams, and/or WebEx; word processing; spreadsheets; databases, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with student development;
  • Minimum of 1 year of previous work experience in academic advising or related student services position (this can include positions held as a student employee).

Compensation

The anticipated salary range for this position is $60,000 - $68,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.
