About the role

The Humane Society of Missouri (HSMO) is a leading animal welfare organization in the Midwest, providing lifesaving care to thousands of animals annually across its St. Louis shelters since 1870.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality examinations, diagnoses, and clinical/surgical treatments for animals within both of our shelters.
  • Oversee veterinary aspects of Licensed Veterinary Technicians serving as veterinary extenders.
  • Train, guide, and assist staff with duties, including proper use of equipment and materials.
  • Participate in educating veterinary students in an elective shelter medicine clinical rotation.
  • Afford assistance to the Director of Shelter Medicine with preparing forensic medical reports for abused or neglected animals and, when needed, testify in court concerning the examination and treatment of shelter or confiscated animals.
  • Thoroughly document and maintain accurate medical records and surgical logs.
  • Prepare and maintain medical, surgical, and drug logs in compliance with State of Missouri regulations, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), USDA, AMCMA, and HSMO requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Shelter Medicine and Director of Veterinary Services to address potential liability cases, ensuring quality standards and reducing risks.
  • Contribute to euthanasia decisions and oversee proper euthanasia procedures.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with staff and the organization as a whole.

Requirements

  • Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine
  • Two to five years of experience in veterinary medicine, with a focus on shelter medicine preferred
  • MO State Veterinary License, along with State and Federal Controlled Substance Licenses, and State and Federal Veterinary Accreditations
  • Familiarity with the use of electronic medical records, general word processing and spreadsheet programs
  • Experience with Chameleon shelter software is helpful but not required
