About the role
Per diem position providing administrative and clinical supervision as House Supervisor, with responsibility for interpreting, enforcing, and supporting philosophies, policies, and procedures across all personnel, patients, visitors, and physicians.
Responsibilities
- Participates in the review, revision and creation of policies and procedures
- Evaluates, communicates and works toward resolution of existing staffing needs in conjunction with unit manager, director and/or staffing coordinator; has the authority to vary or override existing staffing based on specific patient/unit needs
- Responds to unusual incidents/problems, reports to the appropriate department head for follow-up action; communicates using the chain of command
- Provides administrative and clinical supervision to others, evaluates and assesses the appropriateness of care given, develops a plan of action specific to the particular needs while providing direction to the charge nurse/team leader/supervisor in day-to-day operational problem solving
- Confers with the unit manager/director regarding employee performance, identifying performance improvement concerns and recommending appropriate actions to improve outcomes
- Investigates and consults on patient/family concerns and provides resolution; recognizes and manages to rectify emergent or unsafe situations
- Works cooperatively with inter-intra departmental groups in a productive way to solve problems
- Ensures the provision of House Supervisor coverage in the event of illness, vacation, bereavement, etc.
- Acts as a resource person in new employee orientation/unit level in-services, encouraging continual growth and development of personnel including relief supervisors
- Initiates emergency and disaster plans (internal and external) as established by the specific departments and/or institution; makes decisions to promote safety for all involved
- Responds and oversees Code Blue and other emergency situations, demonstrating a calm, professional manner during a crisis or emergency situation at all times within the patient care environment; makes decisions as necessary
- Collaborates with Nursing Administration to develop and implement long and short term goals, assumes responsibility for own continuing education and attends management programs as appropriate
- Participates and presents in organizational, community and national seminars or workshops for the purposes of professional growth and as a representative of the institution
- Works collaboratively with medical staff, nursing staff and admitting office in facilitating and making appropriate decisions regarding patient admissions, transfers and discharges
- Elicits and evaluates feedback from patients, families and/or others, resolves any unmet needs or problems and reports to appropriate unit manager/director
- Promotes and actively participates in hospital wide performance improvement activities and ensures compliance
- Utilizes effective interpersonal skills in maintaining professional relationships, using calm, friendly, professional approach when communicating with physicians, hospital staff, administrators, patients, and family members
- Demonstrates ability to organize work day and recognize and establish priorities
- Demonstrates willingness to do whatever tasks are assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the organization
- Incorporates knowledge of current clinical trends, concepts, research and technology in making sound decisions or judgments and resolving problems through intervention and strategies
- Completes patient care requirements by scheduling and assigning nursing and staff; following up on work results
- Resolves patient needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies
- Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; evaluating new equipment and techniques
- Request and assign beds in the EPIC EMR system
- Assigns bed on date of admission for critical care, assists bed control in placement/internal transfers medical/telemetry patients when needs for special requests and timeliness of ED throughout, medical necessity, sex and patient preference
- During off peak hours, ensures transfers from other facilities are properly authorized and processed on a timely basis, including bed assignment. This includes obtaining all pertinent information and informs appropriate contacts
- Acts as a clinical resource in assessing complex patient care needs or situations and in determining interventions, as appropriate, demonstrating independence in problem solving and utilizing scientific principles to assist with decision making
- Incorporates knowledge of patient privacy, confidentiality and rights, including but not limited to the right to informed consent and right to refuse treatment, into practice, in role of house administrator, maintaining ongoing communication with Administrator on call if problems arise
- Accomplishes organization goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by designing and implementing procedures, rules, and regulations; calling for assistance from other health care professionals
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned
Qualifications
License/Registration/Certification:
- Registered Nurse current licensure with State of Florida
- Workplace Violence Program completion within 90 days of employment
- BLS and ACLS required
Education:
- Bachelor's Degree in nursing preferred
Experience:
- Minimum 1 year clinical experience as a Registered Nurse
- Supervisory experience preferred
