Summary

The pharmacy administrative intern position is a longitudinal experience that develops clinical, professional, leadership, and administrative skills while providing insight into pharmacy operational services and their impact on patient care. This position includes a 10-week summer experience that integrates administrative responsibilities with clinical pharmacy practice in both the central pharmacy and emergency department. Throughout the academic year (fall, winter, and spring), the role continues with clinical pharmacy responsibilities, providing patient care in these settings.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to process improvement initiatives through data collection, analysis, and presentation of findings to pharmacy leadership
  • Collaborate with pharmacy leaders to conduct gap analyses and identify opportunities to improve medication-use processes
  • Engage in departmental initiatives to gain insight into employee engagement strategies and organizational leadership
  • Develop an understanding of project management, quality improvement tools and communication frameworks by observing and applying these tools within medication-use management projects and/or quality improvement projects to enhance workflows and patient safety
  • Develop professional, leadership, and interpersonal skills by observing interactions and decision-making among pharmacy leadership to develop a growth mindset and apply effective strategies in a team and professional settings
  • Collaborate with the clinical pharmacy team in preparing, compounding, and dispensing patient medications by assisting with medication orders to ensure that the patient receives timely, safe, and appropriate treatment
  • Collect and review patient medication information by performing a complete medication history to identify the patient’s current medication regimen and to maintain continuity of care during hospitalization

  • Applies basic technical skills and knowledge of operational processes to perform straightforward and routine activities
  • Understands how the assigned duties integrate with others in the team
  • Depends on direct supervision to accomplish assigned tasks; accountable for developing own self to enhance contribution
  • Uses standard operating procedures to guide own work and solve standard problems; escalates unfamiliar or difficult problems to a more experienced colleague
  • Works within clearly defined standard operating procedures or methods and adheres to established quality guidelines
  • Recognizes opportunities to provide good customer service and demonstrates courtesy in all interactions; effectively exchanges straightforward information

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an ACPE approved college of pharmacy program
  • Required 20 hour ACPE accredited IV training course
  • Preferred Pharmacy immunization certificate

Experience

  • At least 1 year previous pharmacy or hospital experience

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current Texas Pharmacist-Intern license
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers as required by CP 1.20 Life Support Course Requirements 90 Days Required
