About the role

This position assists taxpayers with various services offered by Fairfax County’s Department of Tax Administration, including assessments and payment of individual personal property taxes, real estate taxes, business taxes, county vehicle registration, dog licenses, and parking tickets. The role involves exercising independent judgment and initiative in applying and interpreting complex tax regulations, procedures, and instructions to the public, as well as providing accurate and courteous responses to citizens regarding tax assessment, billing, and collections. Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is required to support Spanish-speaking customers and departmental operational needs.

The assigned functional areas include general administrative support, financial support, and/or customer service. This position may not exceed 1,560 hours per calendar year.

Responsibilities

  • Provide accurate and courteous responses to citizens regarding tax assessment, billing, and collections.
  • Research various computer systems and local tax records pertaining to citizens and businesses.
  • Perform data entry into Purchasing/Logistics Enterprise Resource Planning systems and/or Financial Enterprise Resource Planning systems in at least three functions (e.g., create shells, accounts payable processing).
  • Perform routine Human Capital Management Enterprise Resource Planning system functions (e.g., process PARS, requisitions).
  • Maintain confidentiality and sensitivity to political issues.
  • Write simple documents and process complex data.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with external and internal contacts.

Requirements

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including overtime during peak seasons or as business needs demand.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.

Skills

  • Basic skills in Microsoft Word and applicable Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Ability to write simple documents and communicate effectively.
  • Ability to process and integrate complex data.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Experience working with a diverse population.

Physical Requirements

  • Generally sedentary work, with visual acuity required to read data on a computer monitor.
  • Ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment.
  • Ability to communicate with others.
  • May require lifting up to 15 lbs.
