Adjunct Professor, Music (Applied Studio)

Teach courses aligned with your primary instrument specialty; specific assignments depend on departmental needs each semester. Adjunct Professors are subject to an 18-hour work week.

General Expectations

Responsibilities to Students

• Design and facilitate instructional activities appropriate to course rigor and objectives
• Embed interactive learning activities to engage students and develop active learning skills
• Prepare and use instructional materials aligned with course and program expectations
• Align learning opportunities and assessments with course and program outcomes
• Sequence learning to build student understanding and core competencies
• Integrate workplace professional skills (e.g., attendance, initiative, technology use)
• Motivate students by maintaining a respectful, dignified, and conducive learning atmosphere
• Meet all scheduled classes and maximize instructional time
• Maintain required office hours, including for online and hybrid classes
• Follow attendance and office hour requirements per distance education standards

Responsibilities to the Department

• Follow prescribed course syllabi and adopted textbooks, including assigned readings
• Inform students of learning outcomes, procedures, and grading policies at the start of each semester
• Demonstrate initiative and cooperative support for leadership, faculty, and staff
• Attend and participate in required department and school meetings
• Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair or instructional dean

Responsibilities to the College

• Teach in the modality (face-to-face, hybrid, or online) chosen by the College
• Maintain accurate records and submit attendance and grade reports by deadlines
• Model professional conduct and enforce student conduct policies
• Maintain required memberships, licensures, or certifications per department and accrediting standards

Responsibilities to the Community

• Network with community members to promote the program and its students
• Exhibit conduct reflecting the institution’s mission, vision, and values

Discipline-Specific Responsibilities

• Teach applied music lessons in your primary performance area
• Demonstrate effectiveness teaching students with varying musical knowledge, including majors and non-majors
• Plan and facilitate a weekly one-hour studio masterclass
• Prepare students for juries, recitals, auditions, and other performance requirements
• Participate in end-of-semester jury evaluations and other assessment activities
• Assist with student recitals, including setup and tear-down
• Exhibit strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills

Work Environment & Requirements

• Work may be required outside of normal business hours
• Physical demands include sitting, walking, standing, and repetitive motion
• Minimal travel required; must maintain a valid Texas driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Music or a degree equivalent with 18 hours in Music
• Preferred: Three years of previous teaching experience
