Adjunct Instructor of Dental Assisting
Danville Community College developed from two institutions, Danville Technical Institute and the Danville Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute. The Arts, Sciences, and Business Division seeks adjuncts to teach a variety of online or in-person classes in Dental Assisting as assigned in conjunction with the program coordinator.
About the role
This is a part-time teaching assignment at the College, with an anticipated start of August 2026. Adjunct instructors are supported by faculty and other staff in the development of courses and are involved in decisions about curricula. The position will remain open until filled; however, interested applicants are encouraged to apply as early as possible to ensure full consideration.
Responsibilities
- Deliver hands-on instruction in dental assisting procedures, including chairside assisting, instrument transfer, radiography techniques, dental materials, and infection control practices.
- Evaluate and assess student performance through skills assessments, laboratory demonstrations, clinical observations, and other appropriate evaluation methods.
- Provide timely, constructive feedback and support to help students develop clinical knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and inventory, and communicate equipment or supply needs to the Program Coordinator.
- Collaborate with program faculty to ensure laboratory and clinical instruction aligns with curriculum goals and student learning outcomes.
- Teach day, evening, online, laboratory, and clinical courses, as assigned based on program needs.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, grades, and other required documentation.
- Utilize Microsoft Office, Canvas, and other college-supported technologies to enhance instruction and support student success.
- Complete all required Canvas and instructional technology training.
- Demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills.
- Exercise sound judgment and discretion in decision-making while maintaining professionalism in all interactions.
- Communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
- Demonstrate strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean, Program Coordinator, or immediate supervisor.
Requirements
- Current Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential required.
- Minimum of three (3) years of clinical dental assisting experience.
- Strong knowledge of dental procedures, radiography, and infection control standards.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adjust to change, meet deadlines, and perform multiple tasks as needed.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse population of administrators, faculty, staff, and students.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Ability to utilize technologies to enhance instruction.

Qualifications
Prior teaching experience in a Dental Assisting program is preferred.
Schedule
Regular hours: Monday – Wednesday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. and other times as needed. Responsibilities may include work during the day and/or evening classes for program-placed students and non-curricular students, as well as distance learning classes.
Pay
$700 - $1,100 per credit hour, commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience.
